Growing up as a young punk teen in 80s Southern California was not easy. You became instantly ostracized. Regularly hassled by cops for the way you dressed and kept your hair. People failed to understand that was rebellion, the natural course of a society in a grave flux.
As governor, Reagan granted huge tax breaks to big business and the upper class. The middle and lower classes were left footing the bill. A huge divide formed. Punk helped us rage at that divide.

I always felt like yungblud as a industry plant, a guy created to sell the image of a punk, someone who rebels, but in a safe and sanitized way. "Guys, let's rebel, but the approved way to rebel"

No i'm sorry, I have to disagree with the Yungblud hate. TX2, Zombie Punk, MGK, and thev like? They deserve the hate they get. Yungblud tho? I genuinely dk what tf he did, and why so many people hate him. He's a kind person who actually gives a shit about people (when was the last time any other artist spoke up about the situation in Palestine, or Iran, or any other places? They DON'T, he actually does).

The only reason i've been given is that "he had a festival and it was expensive", which is fucking stupid when the same ppl moaning about paying 50 pounds for a festival, will happily pay multiple times that to see other artists, and not bat an eye, the hypocrisy is crazy. Besides, 50 pound is more than generous for an entire line-up of bands. Besides also, Yungblud himself, the staff who work at the venue, the sound engineers, and all the rest of them still need to get paid, and they get that money from the price of the TICKETS that get sold (and also to a small extent, drinks and merch sold at the venue(s)). If you charged like £20 per ticket, how tf are they gonna get enough money to make a living wage? You lot all scream about how we need to pay workers better, until it comes out of YOUR pocket, then suddenly you're Mr. Krabs with your money. Absolute fucking joke.

Punk is a music genre with a set of ethics which inspire said music. It has a sound which cannot be overturned without said deviation being something new. Trying to claim that anything remotely similar in values is still “punk” is like saying punk is hippie. They’re not the same in execution or mindset…the ONLY similarities are the issues pointed out.

After 40 years of steady listening to damn near every Genre, Sub, & Sub-SUBgenre under the Big Tent of Punk Rock, I still couldn’t say for sure what Punk IS, I just damn sure know what it AIN’T.

To me Yungblud is still technically kinda punk at least in a pop punk way cause even though he had an easy start in life he does seem to genuinely care about the subculture and its values and wants to make the world a better place for the less fortunate. Plus Idles is still punk even if they are praised by the establishment, that just shows that punk is winning the revolution.

Punk’s like this because it’s not trying to change. It’s not the 70s anymore and we have other things to suffer from. It just looks gimmicky. Punk used to sound like that because that’s what they had access to. Now we have access to more, so why not try to make something other than 3 power chords on a shitty electric? I think techno is kinda had a chance to be what punk isn’t anymore but it’s not really there. It’s kinda disappointing to see that people where I’m from (Lebanon) do the exact same sound as everywhere else, I think it’s rather imperialist to import rebellion from the west. Punk has become dogmatic imo.

I quit with the punk scene in California. They said you had to be a democrat to be punk, hated white people and a lot of them were lgbtq whatever… so i made up my own mind and kinda just say if you want to be rebellious, punk whatever, you don’t have to be mean, you dont have to look like a slob, you dont have to do drugs, you dont need bright pink spikes, you dont need to be a fuckin democrat… think punk is all politics? We are being jerked around by opinions and propaganda to the point where we will settle with something that makes us comfortable. We are too far gone to have punks anymore. Just think the way you think and be yourself even if it goes against the grain.

Gatekeeping who/what is and is not punk is some "um actually" poser shit bro….also that street urchin is punk as fuck based on how he lives his life…..he spits in the eye of the establishment every day. Hes made sure that any employment is next to impossible. Gets darby crash hammered all day. And looks like a tool for dressing in every punk fashion stereotype…..how is that not the most punk shit of all time. Bro evolved to the punker final form. Dont be jealous folks, just up your punk game….or grow up, grab a polo and khakis, throw on some hokas and bury your punk youth with no headstone. 🤷‍♂️

It’s a sound, it’s an aesthetic, it’s a lifestyle, it’s a political thing. The definition keeps changing over time. A lot of supposed punks now will disregard misfits, Ramones, and Sex Pistols because they have members who are right wing.

As far as idles, none of the OG punk bands are a real threat either. Most if not all have been featured on commercials on whatever other very straight normal capitalist media.
