The same thing happened to the hippy movement after the 60's. The public perception of hippies went from "Good heavens, what is wrong with the kids?!" and turned into, "Yes uncle Jimmy, the proletariat… we know ,"🙄

Any subculture that is not explicitly anti capitalist will be Disney eventually…even tribal, religious or anti capitalist subcultures can be co-opted but they stand a chance.
It’s all just marketing logic otherwise.

My upbringing was more punk, but there were still a lot of the same issues. When ProTools became the standard in roughly the mid-2000s, you can hear a change in the sorts of bands that were coming out, and that kind of led to me stopping paying attention. Beforehand, even in the polished pop punk records, you could tell there was a human element and a degree of unique tones and play styles to the instruments. Then came the hyperpolished, perfectly quantized and triggered drums and huge guitars on EVERYTHING and it all started sounding the same. If you took away the lead singer you wouldn't even know what band you were listening to.

That's the best video I've seen lately, was talking about the weight of the social media inside the scene with some friends, again the Grammy is a great example of metal-ish aesthetic being thrown into the public and fomenting this slop ass lazy writing bands that promote through selling an image than keeping the scene alive. Cheers from Brazil my dude

Two of my favorite bands of all time are Tithe and Sleep Token. Tithe is a very very small Black Metal band with maybe 800 monthly listeners from Washington state and I obviously don’t need to explain who Sleep Token is. I just don’t get why I can’t enjoy both without some chronically online incel yelling in my ear that I’m not a real metal head because I like Sleep Token.

Never gets old seeing people get salty at the smash success of Sleep Token. Love seeing scizos mald about them. Just listen to the music you like and fuck off.

I believe Sleep Token is hated purely because their music is called metal. If it was called anything else this bandwagon would never have happened. I'm not even a Sleep Token fan, it's just getting kind of ridiculous at this point.

Metal is shitty now because it was originally supposed to be a radical inversion/response to the norms of society. But now that inversion IS the norm. Look around you, society is degenerate trash. Your IG feeds are slop, sex, and war crimes. What is the radical response to living in a society like this?

I really like the first three Slipknot albums. A lot. But I was also a musician in his early 20’s when they dropped their first album. I saw it in the context of a music world where all of the things that came after did not yet exist.

Bruh yall metal elitists need to chill, the people listening to sleep token don’t care if you think they’re metal or not. Sleep token themselves have said it doesn’t matter to them. It ain’t their fault that more people wanna listen to them right now than other modern metal bands who make songs that are basically just breakdown compilations and pig squeals

I don't think digital plugins are responsible for making all bands sound the same. Bands were dialling in the exact same tones as each other before. You'd go into a recording studio and the re-use the same amp / cab as the previous guys.

If anything I think plugins encourage experimentation, you can do all kinds of whacky shit now without having to pay £££ for specific gear.

Half way through the video and I realized that you didn’t mentioned Rammstein. They have a gimmick of being very German and fancy concerts. But they are also truly edgy with disgusting and beautiful lyrics and some crazy shows that are not just a fancy highs hook girls wet dream. There are dick canons, ungodly amount of fire and stunts with storytelling like Mein Teil
