Not sure it's fair to say it's collectively our fault at the end there. The slow upward creep of the price of necessities coupled with stalling real pay means more and more people are forced into for example… IKEA furniture.
In the last few decades I don't know anyone who's shopped there because they enjoy arguing with their loved ones about whether the Strömvik bolt is upside down according to the lazy illustration, they've shopped there because they can't afford the pre-assembled one that costs 4x as much.
As a collective we've clearly failed to assert the 'voting with your feet' power that we're alleged to have in a capitalist society, but I don't think it's as simple as saying we got lazy so much as we got ionised, disorganised, and disenfranchised and now we don't have the leverage to push back.

Bruh speaking of ai hallucination, like 4 days ago I was at Walmart, realized it was time to replace my cars air filter, and googled "2009 nissan altima se v6 air filter number" as I normally would use as a starting point to click through online parts stores to find my part number. I saw the ai answer "the filter number for your 2009 nissan altima 3.5 v6 is xxxxx with y manufacturer and zzzzzz with f manufacturer! :)" i was like hell yeah saved me 5 minutes of research! Bought the part, tried it out, completely wrong part… not even close.

I have said this now, as well as 9ver a decade ago. The United States as a government didn't destroy American manufacturing, ona9we drove out manufacturing for the sole purpose of receiving products that are just as good but at a lower price. So don't blame China, or India, or any of these countries, who yoy should blame us yourself. The moment you release that you are the problem, we'll, then maybe you can become part of the solution

Why that line of reasoning is somewhat flawed:
The idea that this was a 'ruling-class conspiracy' ignores how the economy actually works. Two factors explain this better:
Cost offsets (and lower prices): More often than not, automation and self-service lower the cost of services. If a digital bank doesn't have to maintain physical branches or pay thousands of tellers, it can offer you a 100% free account. If companies were forced to keep humans performing every manual task, the cost of products and services for the consumer would be much higher.
The quest for convenience: We consumers often prefer to do the work ourselves. It is much faster to make a Pix transfer on your phone at 11 PM on a Sunday than to wait in line at the bank on Monday morning. We trade our 'unpaid labor' for time and autonomy.
2. 'They invent fake innovation that harms the consumer'
The grain of truth:
There is indeed a phenomenon known as 'enshittification'—a term coined by writer Cory Doctorow. It describes how major tech platforms (like Uber, Netflix, or Amazon) start out wonderful and cheap to attract everyone, but once they dominate the market, they begin to degrade the service, introduce ads, and raise prices to boost profits. Furthermore, concepts like 'planned obsolescence' (designing a phone to last a shorter time so you buy another one) are real.
Why that line of reasoning is somewhat flawed:
Claiming that innovation is 'fake' and exists solely to harm the consumer ignores the very nature of capitalism and competition:
The consumer decides what stays: If an innovation were truly fake and bad—and if there were free competition—consumers would simply switch to a competitor. The market is littered with 'innovations' that failed miserably because consumers rejected them (such as 3D TVs or early virtual reality headsets that never caught on)." …day-to-day).
Internal efficiency innovation: Sometimes, a change might seem like "fake innovation" to you, yet it solves a massive problem regarding logistics, security, or waste for the company—keeping the business alive. If the business stays alive, it continues to serve the consumer.
The bottom line
The argument you heard is mistaken in painting the scenario as a calculated act of villainy ("they’re making us work for free and selling us junk").
The reality is that technology advances and changes our relationship with consumption. We do more work at certain stages (like scanning our own groceries), but we gain efficiency and speed that would have been unthinkable thirty years ago. It isn't a "sham"; it is simply the complex workings of the market economy trying to balance costs, profits, and what the consumer is willing to accept.
