The Rest Is History Podcast Hosts (FULL EPISODE) | Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend

Team Coco | April 30, 2026

Historians Dominic Sandbrook & Tom Holland feel surprisingly aroused and chuffed, respectively, about being Conan O’Brien’s friends.

Hosts of The Rest Is History podcast Dominic Sandbrook and Tom Holland sit down with Conan to discuss laughing through the grimmest historical episodes, all-time favorite heroes of yore, and allowing history to remind us that everything is cyclical. Later, Conan consults his (not so) fake lawyer David Melmed about singing popular songs on the podcast.

I saw this in December 2025 and decided there and then that listening to The Rest Is History daily would be my New Year's Resolution for 2026. Still going and loving every minute. Thank you, thank you!!

"Always beat them". Sure. More social rights, political stability, no Brexit, no Murdoch or russians destroying democracy, no embaracing royal family, etc, etc. I get it, even the "Labour" party is conservative. Love England but despise the cliché france bashing (one of the first successeful cases of wide spread misinformation).

I’m obsessed with these guys too—about 300 episodes deep at this point. My gateway was the The Rest Is History episode with Tom and Conan on The Beatles, and I’ve been hooked ever since. Thanks for bringing so much entertainment (and honestly, a sense of purpose) into my life. Absolutely brilliant.

Conan says at about 45 minutes in, that it's popular in our politics to say, "Can't we return to that golden old time?" but that there was no golden old time. There were always problems. People were always greedy, stupid, and destructive, etc. Yeah, I agree with that, but, if you asked me to choose to be a forty year old man today, or in 1890, I'd take 1890 in a heartbeat. The problems people had back then, they were problems perennial to human beings. The problems they had seem humane in comparison to what we have now. Frightening new technology? Yeah, they had that. Maybe being blown up in your own home in a gas explosion or poisoned by lead lining in cups and plates seems bad, as was all-cause mortality, but, generally, there wasn't this pervasive sense of alienation that I can sense having lowered like a sulfurous cloud that just wasn't there in the '80s and '90s when I was growing up. So, yeah, we're living longer, but poorer, lives. Our lives are quantitatively better, but qualitatively worse. As far as I can tell, most kids now are what we would have considered functionally illiterate only a few decades ago. They can read words but they can't comprehend what they're reading. This doesn't bode well for the future. To me, it's not that there was a "golden old time" where there were no problems – it's that I can make an educated comparison of the problems of my own time and the problems of previous times and can say I'd rather have the problems of previous times. Our problems seem dystopian in a way the problems of 1890 were not.

the hard part of hearing "it's been worse before" is that things only progress because people do something about it. we can't just chill out waiting for this era to end because it will not without action

Best jokes on this episode – 1) Oliver Cromwell is a hero to Englishmen 2) Margaret Thatcher was a great PM 3) Churchill can be forgiven for all his crimes because he got one thing right 4) Two Englishmen's account of history is unbiased and accurate 🤣😂
