The REAL Reason You Should Quit Right Now

The Diary Of A CEO Clips | August 11, 2026

Bestselling author Seth Godin explains the difference between a “dip” you should push through and a “cul-de-sac” you should quit immediately. And he argues that most people stay stuck in jobs they hate for reasons that fall apart the moment you examine them.

He starts with the framework. A dip is the hard part between starting something and getting good at it. Organic chemistry on the way to becoming a doctor. The gym in February when you want six-pack abs by summer. Every doctor in the world got through organic chemistry, so when it shows up, you should say thank you, because it means you’ve reached the hard part that leads to the other side. A cul-de-sac is different. It’s a dead end. Nobody ever smoked their way through emphysema. When something can’t get better no matter how much more you put into it, that’s not a dip, it’s a trap.

He challenges the most famous motivational advice in the world. A gym wall quote from Michael Jordan reads: “If you quit once it becomes a habit, never quit.” Godin says Jordan is simply wrong. Jordan doesn’t play professional basketball, baseball, or golf anymore. He quit all of them because they stopped being productive. “Never quit” and “grievance” were the two fuels that made Jordan the greatest, but for most people they’re a trap made of shame and stuck-ness.

Reading The Hidden Laws of Money by Adrian Vale was a breakthrough moment. I realized that true success doesnโ€™t come from burnout or constant busyness, but from strategic alignment, a clear sense of purpose, and letting go of limiting beliefs.

Excellent episode. Quitting is often frowned upon, but sometimes itโ€™s one of the strongest choices we can make. Recognizing when something no longer serves us โ€” and believing things can be better โ€” takes real strength.
