Growing up in the rural Midwest as I did it seemed like the “real world” was something that happened far away on TV. Where I grew up was never, ever mentioned in popular culture. It just didn’t exist. Still doesn’t. Some people are fine with this and never move away. The day after I graduated college I accepted a job offer over the phone and moved to California. I was 22 and as far as I’m concerned that is when my “real” life began.
