The OBSCURE 80’s Cartoon Iceberg EXPLAINED [2/2]

The "Fantastic Max" theme has lived rent-free in my head since it first aired on ABC on Saturday mornings.

I'm 43 now.

I know Kidd Video (it was great) Pole Position, Monchichi (Caveman Labubu?), Galaxy High School was cool, Camp Candy (was it before or after the Great Outdoors?), Get along Gang, and briefly Saber Rider. …. after watching a bit, Pandamonium. I remember it and I had the board game as well.

As a kid I remember turning on Nickelodeon, hoping Bananaman would come on. Sadly, it rarely did

I'm the only person I know who actually saw Meatballls & Spaghetti when it aired.

It's weird that we got to Tier 5 before I finally got shows I had actually seen: Queen Emeraldas and Bananaman.

I totally remember this show and really liked it as a little kid, I was like 4-5 years old and would have never thought of Fantastic Max again if it hadn't been for this short segment.

I loved Fantastic Max!

Are we sure Little Clowns of Happytown actually existed as a TV show and isn’t just something from an analog horror project?

Arnold Horshack voiced one of the bad guys in Little Clowns of Happy Town.

In order of increasing Prominence to me (Least to most, that is):

1) I had wondered about Maxie's World, it kinda turned up on UK TV fully formed, with no rhyme or reason.

2) Bananaman was voiced (at least for all the male characters) by British Comedy troupe and alumni of the famous Cambridge University Footlights society, The Goodies. Being of course, Tim Brooke-Taylor, Bill Oddie and Doctor Graeme Garden. Bonus Fact, as of the writing of this comment, Dr Garden is the last surviving Member. Bananaman would eventually find his way, at least in his comic-book incarnation, all the way to the heights of DC Thomson's The Dandy, sister Comic to their equally Famous The Beano, home of the British Dennis the Menace, an entirely Different character to the American Dennis, and if I may say, far more of a Menace. The British Dennis counts Mark Hamill himself among his fans!

3) Possibly excluded for not being a Cartoon, but still somewhat adjacent, Creator of Mazinger/Tranzor Z Go Nagai also created Thunderbirds-style puppet action Series X Bomber, which was Translated into English as Star Fleet, whose music was written and performed by Paul Bliss of the Hollies, and whose Ending theme was Memorably covered by Brian May and Eddie Van Halen. The Star Fleet Project was recently remastered and can be found here on Youtube.

Also: I remember that in some parts of the UK, ITV would occasionally air episodes of the Mediterranean show "La Linea", a cartoon about a line-based character warring with his animator. I highly doubt that any episodes were actually produced in the 1980s though.

Oh god, this was a good one! They’re all good one’s, but this one especially. I visualized Barbie with a hand-cannon uttering the same line from the end of the Maxie segment.

I feel like I remember several of these better than ones from previous tiers. Bionic Six was great (in my memory, anyway). Definitely remember Bananaman. Not only did I watch Fantastic Max but I randomly rewatched the first episode a few weeks ago, and BOY does that not hold up.

Never saw Power Masters, but man the animation in that intro sequence is impressive.

Dinosaucers is my favorite obscure cartoon. I've never met anyone that knew what I was talking about.

The theme song is awesome and the dinosaurs are not accurate. It's okay, clearly was going for style over substance. What a style, though.

The only one I seen was Bionic Six. Not surprising, since I grew up without cable.

Bananaman was way more prominent here in the UK, partly because it featured the voices of the Goodies and a similar absurdist style of humour. The comic is still going and there was even a musical.
