The new highway to the Arctic Ocean
Until recently, Canada didn’t have a road link to the Arctic Ocean. But last year, the all-weather Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk Highway opened, which meant that finally the country was connected “from sea to sea to sea”. I set out to drive it, but it didn’t quite go how I planned.

I wanted this video to be so much more, but my plans and script had to change quickly — and eventually my flight to Tuktoyaktuk was delayed due to weather, so I only had about two hours there. I hope I've managed to at least capture a postcard of the town!

Hey Tom I just wanted to say thanks for this video because it helped me a bunch today with my geography exam, just one problem. I checked the description, and only just realized, I misspelled Tuktoyaktuk.

Oh hey my grandparents helped do maintenance on that highway back with their company North Star Construction. If Tom ever wants, he can interview my grandma about it. Papa sadly passed away in 2014 but grandma is still kicking.

Been up to Tuk many times for work over the years. Always flew, never drove from Inuvik.

Sea level rise is linear. Quit the fear mongering.

what do the white panels on the town's welcome sign cover up?

Wonder if the road means the town will thrive – or die. Roads are precarious things.

"I came here to show you the road that goes all the way North. There are other ones, but they are not accessible year round due to weather. Unfortunately, this road is unusable now due to weather." Canada, the land where the only year round feature is disappointment.

I've driven all the way from Calgary to Tuktoyaktuk, and my God is this a big country!

There's something funny about an "all weather highway" being closed due to being wet.

Metallica and Hole played in Tuktoyaktuk in 1995! It was for a contest held by a beer company.

I have been there before the road was constructed, now I have to go back on to drive all the way to Tuk, that's what they call it in short.

This is so cool, my grandparents work with the Northern grocery stores so they used to be up north a lot. They’re retired now but they sent us pictures from Inuvik and Tuktoyuktuk.
