In the 4th Episode of the Mixtape Series I visited Amir Rahimi, owner of Rappin’ and Snackin’. You may have seen him on Instagram or YouTube before – he has an absolutely massive collection of hip hop music in multiple formats: Cassettes, Records, and CDs.

The Mixtape Episode features a few minutes of my visit with him, but today I’m sharing the full video from my visit with him. We talk about the differences between music mediums and how that informs what artists make, dive through his philosophy of what copies he plays and doesn’t – this was such a fun time chatting it up with Amir and seeing his collection.

Once I saw the independent release of Domino's first album, before Outburst, his record label, signed a distribution deal with RAL/Def Jam/Sony, I knew the collection was no joke. I still have my copy of that album. It was sent to me by Def Jam's publicist back in 1993.

Local Records shops, back stores, flee markets, warehouse, wholesalers, exchange, contact/meet artists)producers, trips, find old private collections, ebay, online stores, classifieds, buy to also sell… That's what it takes to build a collection of rare and obscure records. And of course passion, time and money. I loved every minute of it.

Those cassettes should be vertical!!!!!!CDs will degrade over time do to “bit rot”. Sadly digital is the only true form of preservation in the end.
