The Most Gen X Movies of the 90s (Part One: 1990-1994)

My So-Called Gen X Life | June 22, 2026

As a Gen Xer born in 1977, MY Gen X movies showed up in the 90s.

The way I see it, a Gen X 90s movie should primarily be one that captures the experience of 70s and early 80s babies during their teen and young adult years.

Itโ€™s not just โ€œany movie we watched in the 90s,โ€ we’re talking about the movies that reflected our cultural moment, attitudes, and struggles. The ones that actually felt like they were made for the younger half of Gen X.

Absolutely love Clerks. I remember working in a music store in the late 90s, my coworkers nicknamed me Randall because I was not afraid to be snarky and sarcastic to customers being assholes.

Most excellent collection of flicks. Another '77 baby here. You're doing the Lord's work here, Natalie. Can't wait for part 2, and I definitely need to make it to an online hang sometime.

When's part 2?!? I loved this! And have you ever seen Angus?

Edit: I'm sorry I should've waited until the end of the video before asking when part 2 was, I apologize for being an overly excited dope ๐Ÿ˜‚

Toy Soldiers! I swear everyone sleeps on this movie. Between this and Red Dawn my sister and I would imagine what we'd do if the Russians/Cubans/whatever invaded our tiny, rural, absolutely useless upstate NY town.

Also YES Cutting Edge! DB Sweeney at his absolute best.

"What on earth would make you call his mother a gardening tool?" Still kills me. Thank you, House Party. "Toe pick!" Still use that line. The entire "selling out" scene in Wayne's World we still laugh about. This whole time (late 80's – early 90's) had some of the wildest, and in many cases some of the most creative, stories. Nearly every movie had quotable lines, and we still use them. Clerks is absolutely #1, though. It wasn't just the reliability and quotes, but how he managed to make it; Gen X being stubborn and creative.

I got to see so many of those early 90s movies including Don't Tell Mom, and Weekend at Bernie's and Indiana Jones Last Crusade. I even was allowed to see Terminator 2 when I was just 12! My grandma used to take me and my brother to all of these movies at the discount mall theater for $1 a ticket. Then one day when I was 13, I saw my last movie with her, Nightmare Before Christmas, just before I became too cool to be rolling around with my grandma. Enjoy that time with your grandparents, kids, when you're very young. It goes fast even when it seems like it's going very slow.

Argg you really got us Xennials waiting on tenderhooks for next week!
For real though I am so happy to see Pump Up the Volume getting it's flowers lately. One of my all time favorite movies and I found it while waiting for my parents to finish shopping at a Sam's Club of all places. I wanna say somewhere around 95 or 96. Noone I knew has any idea it existed when I would pull it out.
