The Moment Gwen Realized She Was The Product

Guitar Meets Science | June 18, 2026

This week, we explore the tumultuous rise of No Doubt, the Orange County ska band that transformed a devastating breakup into a global phenomenon. We uncover the tragic story of founding frontman John Spence, the bold lie that landed Adrian Young the drumming job, and the intense heartbreak between Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal that fueled the *Tragic Kingdom* album. From their rejected debut to the diamond-selling success of “Don’t Speak” and their historic Sphere residency, we track every twist of their remarkable journey. Kindly like and subscribe – it really helps this channel a lot. I do appreciate it!

This VST plugin, The Stereo Sound Extractor, is BADASS -I coded it up from over 10 year’s hard research. It won awards. Now you can own it for the paltry sum of $29. Yup, I’m basically giving it away: https://burninguitfiddle.gumroad.com/l/rbiuu

@guitarmeetsscience my grandpa had an incident like the one you close this episode with, but when he was getting close to 80.

The dude was a decorated WWII veteran, the son of a coal miner, and a really good husband / father / member of his community.
But age did to him what it does to us all, if we're lucky enough to live that long.
He always insisted on walking to the grocery store because it was only a few blocks away, and one day the Urge hit when he was too old to run that last half a block but couldn't walk that quick either.

He was, of course, SO MAD about it. But everyone else completely understood and forgave him, even though we also laughed about it for the rest of his life.
All the cousins of my generation were old enough to remember it, and we still laugh about sometimes, even now that he's been gone 23-odd years. It's a fond laugh, and it wouldn't be as funny if we hadn't loved him so much.

So my ultimate point is: you are in good company, Jimmy! 🍻

Gwen Stefani is a fake punk, sellout MAGA twat. She has a great voice but her music sucks and fortunately for her America has about 150 million idiots willing to buy cheap crap off the shelf at Walmart.
Fuck you Gwen. You're just a girl.

With her energy and female power message, I always said Gwen Stefani was a 90's Cyndi Lauper. Some of you probably remember their performance at the Mtv New Years concert bringing in the new millenium. They covered REM's It's the end of the world as we know it.

Beck in the mid 90's I was doing deliveries for my brother. I was on the Olympic Peninsula and didn't know that Lollapalooza was taking place. I was at a small store getting a drink and there were a lot of people there. There was this tiny blonde in front of me and I talked to her, she told me about the concert and I told her to watch her surrounding because there are creepy people out there. She thanked me and off she went. A few months later I saw the music video for Just A Girl and there was that tiny blonde girl. When I saw her she was probably laughing at what is said and probably thought I was a dork.

Tragic Kingdom was one of the first two CDs I ever bought. The other was Razorblade Suitcase by Bush. I remember getting them both at the same time at Best Buy, which always had the best CD prices. The first concert I ever went to? No Doubt and Bush. April 25, 1997, Woodlands Pavilion, Houston, TX. Went with my older sister who got me into rock music with those two. I was more of a Bush fan. My 8th grade school picture has me wearing the razorblade T-shirt I got from that concert. But, let's be honest, Tragic Kingdom was the better album.

This band is so much better than lot of people give them credit for. Actually some of the less cartoonish ska of the 90s. Spiderwebs is one of my favorite songs of that whole decade. I didn't like what Gwen did after No Doubt but that band was great. It's funny how Eric Stefani went on to work on The Simpsons.

Hella Good was produced by The Neptunes by the way… Made me think, how about an episode on N.E.R.D?

Another 90s band who made my roller rink deejay job that much easier. Load up 'Tragic Kingdom, and have an extended smoke break,
I wonder how many of your old classmates remember your unfortunate evacuation? Probably all of them. If nothing else, you created an unforgettable moment in their youth. 🤣

In second grade. I had an incident where the substitute teacher wouldn’t let me go use the bathroom. Ended up peeing my pants in the coat room. Worse part. The only pants that came close to fitting me in the lost and found were these purple corduroy bangers. Ah, childhood trauma.
