Thank you for the deep dive into Double Nickels! My first gf gave me copy of it she'd made on cassette tape and I listened to it all school year 1991-92. It opened up new possibilities in life, thinking and music, and showed me that punk truly is "whatever we made it to be." As for my spotify wrapped, I listened to Mogwai in heavy rotation this year, owing to their 2025 tour here in the States… Scottish post-rock and Anatolian psych rock for me this past year.

Check out fIREHOSE, if you enjoy this album then you would also appreciate those albums almost certainly. IMO better than Minutemen, have a feeling you might agree. Altho yes it’s pretty hard to argue with Double Nickels.

Anyway, get Ragin’ Full On if you can find it. Trust me, just do it. You will not regret it.

Similar kind of spontaneous, run through the blender feel but more tuneful, dare I say folk-ish elements up front thanks to new frontman Ed FROMOHIO.

Every song is great, makes no sense it isn’t held in equal esteem as DNOTD if yer asking me.

Interesting following this up with Velvet Underground review. I can’t see them as anything but polar opposites. Regular guys jamming econo vs glam-celebrity seeking poseurs.

Thank you for this review. I was a 14 year old kid in 1992 and saw this on a list of best punk rock albums. I went out and bought it expecting something that sounded similar to Black Flag, the Dead Kennedys and all of the bands that I thought sounded the way that punk should sound. This didn’t. It took years of listens to wrap my brain around it. Sometimes I’m still trying to understand. It’s one of the great musical gifts of my nearly fifty year old life. It helped me discover Wire, Beefheart and tons of other styles/artists/genres.

Thank you for the review. I subscribed after this one and I’ve enjoyed the videos thus far.

This is the Minutemen holy grail but The Punch Line has….the bigger punch. I was going to request this album on Needle Drop's classics review week but this is much better 😁

    A few bits…

If I remember correctly the first press of double nickles has " TAKE THAT HUSKERS" inscribed in the run out groove.

I dont know the story of the photo on the inner fold out with the young kid standing in front of the band…but it has been my favorite photo for decades.

I said review "double nickels" below the Daydream nation review! And she did it. This is what I wrote: "Providence features recording of Minutemen's Mike Watt and his "voice mail" message from the answering machine. Watt was urging Thurston to stop smoking marijuana at that time. Seriously, everyone careful with "mota", it'll wipe your memory out. Put "double nickels" on your turntable, and then with two other nickels, you get four."

Ms. Narrator: The Minutemen were my favoirite band when I was in my most formative years in my teens/20s. D. Boon walked up to ME before their show to ask how I was. A band called the Laughing Hyenas were playing one of their first shows in 1984 in Detroit and they just got on stage. While D. was chatting with me and the Hyenas started to play, he said "they sound like the Birthday Party" and walked away. Your description of this album is quite spot on.

I thought it was the 110 to Pedro, the 10 runs to Santa Monica (speaking as a former South Bay metalhead that discovered the Minutemen waaaaay too late)… but thank you for bringing them back to the zeitgeist.

No, “double nickels on the dime” means exactly 55 mph. “On the dime” means exactly. The highway to San Pedro was (at that time, as depicted clearly in the photo) California Highway 11, the Harbor Freeway. Which is now Interstate 110. Not 10. Interstate 10 is not far from the place where that photo was taken (heading northbound on US 101 downtown?). Interstate 10 is the Santa Monica Freeway — it takes you west to Santa Monica, not to San Pedro.

I was growing up in SoCal when this album was released . It's still one of my faves. I saw the Minutemen twice and they were on fire when touring this album. Thanks a million for bringing back better times of seeing 6 bands for $6 at Adams Ave San Diego. YOU ARE THE BEST REVIEWER!!!

What a great surprise! I used to gust dj in a radio studio where they last played before D. Boon died. Ray Charles recorded some important work there too. (It was illegal to drink on air but that was ignored. The coke machine would dispense beer if you hit a certain two buttons at once)
