On August 21st, 1986 a strange mist rose from an obscure lake in Cameroon Africa. Within minutes of its arrival, virtually every living thing in the area had perished. This it the dark story of the Lake Nyos Incident.

The opening chapter on Lake Monoun is what makes this so unsettling — Nyos wasn't the first warning, it was the second. 37 people died at Monoun in 1984 and it barely registered, then two years later the same invisible cloud rolls through Nyos and kills 1,746 people in their sleep. The detail about car engines sputtering out in the fog stuck with me — the gas was displacing the oxygen before anyone even realized what was happening.

Africa is incredibly beautiful and blessed with so many natural resources. If it weren’t constantly being exploited, destabilized, and subjected to conflicts and harmful chemicals brought from elsewhere, Africa would have been one of the wealthiest continents in the world long ago.

Why does USA have like a million different subscriptions for security on the internet where in the UK we just gat a phone and are like “ok I’ll use this for everything now” and it’s fine. But regarding this case it’s gotta be a massive government caused incident, trying our chemical weapons.

Hearing stories like this, discovering how terrifying some animals sound when they’re fighting or communicating (like the shrieks of bobcats or lynx’) – it’s no wonder that hundreds of years ago people believed so heavily in spirits and ghosts and other supernatural phenomena. They had no other way to explain stuff like this. And it sounds/looks unexplainable. I mean it took us in modern times, 2 incidents with hundreds dead, and TEAMS of scientists to figure out this lake explosion stuff! They didn’t have a chance at accurately describing/diagnosing these things hundreds or thousands of years ago.
