The Smurfs took the merchandising world by storm and everyone wanted to get in on the action, including one of the people instrumental in getting the Smurfs on the air in the United States.
When it wasn’t enough, he created THE SNORKS and tried to organize a Snorks merchandise blitz similar to the Smurfs.

Nah, SNORKS were black, Hispanic, Asians all the minorities. Smurfs were aryan nation and kkk, papa Smurf the grand wizard. Gargamel is Jewish. That’s why they portray him as evil and got us all living under water.

Man, I remember watching The Snorks quite often on weekend mornings in the mid-to-late 2000s when I was really young, when the show would air on Boomerang and then go right into The Smurfs! I actually somewhat preferred The Snorks to The Smurfs, but I would every once in a while still stay tuned to actually try watching The Smurfs, and while I don’t remember that much about scenes from The Snorks as a show itself, I DEFINITELY remember the intro! I actually think I discovered The Smurfs around the same day I watched The Snorks on the channel, and I didn’t even notice that the latter was the supposed ripoff of the other, but I was still just bright enough to be able to somewhat put the similarities between the names of the shows together, at least!

Before SpongeBob there was the Snorks… a Smurfs wannabe underwater.

As a Smurfs ripoff, The Snorks wasn't too bad. The stories and characters were engaging enough.

I was a big Snorks fan as a kid. Yet for whatever reason if you'd have asked me any of their names before watching this video, I wouldn't have been able to lol

God there's nothing more American than trying to force the concept of greed into an inherently pure, moneyless culture…

The Smurfs are second rate to the Snorks in my eyes. I intend on showing the Snorks to my niece.

I could've sworn that the snorks were the cousins of the smurfs

The Snorks may not have received the same recognition as the Smurfs. But they did receive a cameo in that beloved 80s classic about a boy and his extra terrestrial friend, Mac and Me.

Honestly, I was a bigger fan of this than the Smurfs! Not that I really want them to, but I'm slightly surprised there hasn't been major push to make a movie or a new series out of this, considering how much they revive the Smurfs. But maybe that's my 90s brain talking.

The 1987 episodes were more like mini soap operas; it was one 21-minute episode instead of two shorter episodes; and they usually only had two or three main characters along with a whole bunch of one-shot guest stars. I also wonder why Dimmy was Chuck Cunningham’d after season two.

COMEDY NOT ADVENTURE LIKE THE SMURFS. SET IN THE PRESENT DAY NOT SET IN THE MIDDLE AGES LIKE THE SMURFS. COMPLETELY DIFFERNT ORIGINAL CHARACTATERS AND PLACE. THE SNORKS IS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SERIES. IT IS ONE THE BEST HB CARTOONS FROM 1980'S. IT IS A CLASSIC NOT A RIP-OFF!

6:44 It's funny, looking back, how Peyo's last Smurf comic he worked on was a comic about the Smurfs inventing/adopting money and how it affects the Smurf Village

5:18 That avalanche of Smurfs clones and other merch-first series make it clear why Ren & Stimpy would've felt like such a breath of fresh air back then

How can the Snorks be a ripoff of the Smurfs if they're part of the same franchise? Yeah, apparently they both come from the magazine Spirou.

I thought the Snorks were made of SPRITE. You know, that lemon-lime soft drink made by Coca-Cola in order to spite 7-Up?

I absolutely remember seeing this cartoon on Boomerang at some point. The music really caught my attention, even though they were more than a little bit weird, and I was already a young teenager at the time. I'm glad that I gave them a chance! The Snorks were fun, clever, and truly hilarious! Nice to see them get a moment in the spotlight again! May have to visit that new website soon!
