The History of Robotech: The Movie: “The Worst Experience of My Professional Career”

Robotech: The Movie was released (sort of) in 1986, an amalgamation of 2 other different things that were not related at all. In any way.

Following in the tradition of Robotech, as it turned out. But it didn’t start out that way. Robotech: The Movie started out as an idea to bring Robotech to the masses and to reward loyal fans. Oh well.

14:43 my father wrote teddy ruxpin, afaik it was an adaptation of a book so he was adapting dialogue for television. He bought an old VHS once and paused it on the credits screen and I swear he left the TV paused on that credit frame for an entire evening one time. He was a bit too proud of it.

I can’t stand that man anymore. Haven’t spoken to him in a decade at least.

12:30 I was a huge fan of Robotech when it originally aired and was hyper aware of the movie at the time. Was basically able to catch a screening of it at a convention in the ~late 80s but hadn’t heard the bit about the original cut of the movie occurring alongside the first 13 episodes of Robotech Macross… or maybe I did but mercifully forgot over time. I would be very interested to learn more about that original cut. I imagine there is zero chance a copy exists somewhere. If I’m wrong & one does exist, I would love to find that out as well…

It's cool to know how Robotech, a very small but essential Anime series, helped pave the way for things I love, which would come out years later, like Power Rangers, Saber Rider, Beetleborgs, and more. The history of Robotech is quite interesting, and the fact that there is a Spider-Man tie-in is a cherry on top! I'm not someone who grew up with Robotech, but I can certainly appreciate its value to the narrative of helping Anime and stories from Japan catch more audiences in the US. As usual, your humor in this video was fantastic and helped sell me on what makes Robotech worth looking into, even though I didn't grow up with it! Kudos and thank you for making a fantastic video series out of this franchise!

Another research gem, thanks! I’m from Argentina, and I think I watched the movie! The only thing that remains in my memory is the sense of disappointment for the blatant reheating of past footage.
That Pepsi commercial, on the other hand, brings me back!!!

MegaZone23 on its own is a great Anime, as is the sequel MegaZone23 II…

The actual Macross movie, which was the alternate telling of the whole series, was also amazing too…

Fun Fact: in MegaZone23 II, there is a scene where one of the anarchist bikers is playing a Silver Hawks pinball machine…

    😳

When I was a kid I would buy robotech comics pub,I shed by Comico, which were the cartoons in comic book form, from this little shop at our local farmers market and auction. There were always advertisements advertising Robotech the movie. I wanted to see it so bad, like it was a new Star Wars movie-that was my passion for this, but it never came out. Now over 40 years later I finally know why.

I'm still working on my backlog… I do miss some of the shorter stories of the main channel's early days. Currently listening to "Aliens Poisoned the Human Soldier" 😊
