In 2014, writer Ta-Nehisi Coates’ article for The Atlantic “The Case for Reparations” went viral. Tracing everything from the racial terror of slavery to the rampant housing discrimination of the 20th century, Coates made the case for financial reparations for the descendants of those who were enslaved in the US. However, the argument for reparations extends back much further than 2014 and also has significance beyond the Black American community. Today Danielle talks about one of the most controversial topics moving through American politics for over 150 years.

Origin of Everything is a show about the undertold histories and cultural dialogues that make up our collective story. From the food we eat, to the trivia and fun facts we can’t seem to get out of our heads, to the social issues we can’t stop debating, everything around us has a history. Origin of Everything is here to explore it all. We like to think that no topic is too small or too challenging to get started.

Garbage- selective history to cherry pick which slavery should generate reparations (any where black people were victims) and which should be totally ignored (any where white people are victims). Common factor is no none white majority nations have to hold any responsibility or pay a penny for their foul acts of slavery. (African tribes, Chinese, Asia). When will black majority nations get off their knees and stop following white majority nations around with begging bowls howling eternal cries of self pity and anachronistic victimhood?

Reparation is nothing more than a second payment for that slave. Something I find disgusting their tribal chief sold them to the slaver NOW their heirs are selling them a second time.

Not In My Name – I hope they can all RIP god bless all Slaves.

Black people are crying about their ancestors being slaves but then demand reparations. They want 40 acres and a mule but to me it sounds like you wanna be back on a plantation like your ancestors were. On top of that wtf are y’all going to do with all of that anyway? You guys wanting reparations are offended by everything, ashamed of nothing.

For real reparations: they identify an actual victim of the offense in question.
They specify the abuses and damages.
They assign a dollar amount for their compensation.
    They pay the victim.
If the victim is deceased; they identify the closest living legal heir and pay them.
What is the name of the victim that you are trying to collect the unpaid reparations for?

Wait a minute, there's a good rumbling of blacks claiming to be native and already in North America before slavery but Origins just said the natives got broke off already. So they need to leave our movement be and storm them reservation and ask them folk where they money at. 😂😂😂😂

My solution is to give them reparations with the stipulation they can never use racism again, if they do, they have to pay back the money with interest, if they don't pay the money back they have to go to jail 1 year for every $100.

Reparations will eventually be passed for descendants of slaves in the US. The problem, are the current detractors. It's going to cost a lot more money and resources the longer that the US government waits. It's the right thing to do. Do it. Get over it. Watch the economy grow (cause it will), and then reap the benefits of the decision.

You weren't ever a slave. And I have ever owned a slave. I don't owe you a single penny. But the reperations you seek would come out of tax dollars that I have payed. MAKE THAT MAKE SENSE

Okay folks. Time for a dose of reality. "Reparations" will NEVER happen. It's just a tool Democrats use to manipulate you. If you think you're getting free money from the government then you're just plain ignorant.

I think the "reparation" from Germany paying the zionist settler colony billions of $ can be seen differently today. Don't forget that Lehi worked with Hi****. And so much on.

Just cut the checks we don’t need y’all to tell us what to do with our money and we don’t need it put in no trust just another way of mishandling the money wake up black people just cut the check and less talk we’re done talking F.B.A.

First off we GAVE black people reparations by fighting for their freedom and gave them rights to become American citizens and the right to vote and in the 1960s we gave black people civil rights and also give them free collage and free welfare and free rent. We also allow them to use that welfare to buy AirPods and expensive shoes and also allow them a free date plan and a free phone which they can sign up for THEY HAVE MORE THEN REPARATIONS

I wonder if Jesus asked God for reparations? You NEVER hear American Indians (me), Jews, Latinos or Asians asking for reparations!! This is greed of the highest kind. Pathetic. Does the black slave owners descendants have to Pay?? Careful want to ask for.

Unfortunately the tide of the video goes ina specific direction. And didn’t touch on others. The African origin or American slavery seems to left out. Indentured servitude. And blatant slavery of another group, the Irish too. While informative yes this video does seem to paint a picture of and show us the pictures. That’s the difference in history and making an argument.so personally I’m not for reparations right now . Politicians are using it to get votes. California is the prime example.
So much of what the USA has done and made to have its wealth was not and was from slavery. But the reality is separate it from its origins to get at something. We can never say definitive what America would have been without slavery accept one thing I think is. And that European people would have colonized Noeth America regardless of slaves. They were sailing here without slaves farming without them and moving north south and west without them. The slaves were here but not every one had them or depended on them for labor.
So not all families can have direct wealth from them. Even inventions by black in America can’t be perceived as whites owe them or never would have been invented. By the videos own premise some black families would owe reparations too. I don’t think rationalized that to far. Anyway PBS I love your more fact based programs and less the make an argument ones as the bias runs to freely. Take care peace love and good happiness stuff.

But they gave reparations to Jewish people because a lot of them were just Jewish why not just give reparations to African-Americans who cares if they are African-Americans. If they are black they deserve it.
