The History of Rats (That We Know Of) | Lindsay Nikole

Lindsay Nikole | April 29, 2026

Rats aren’t just pests they’re one of the greatest success stories in the history of life on this planet. Trace the full evolutionary journey of rats, from the rat-like proto-mammals that survived the dinosaurs, to the rise of true rodents, to how brown rats hitched a ride on human civilization and conquered every continent. Meet prehistoric giants like the bison-sized Josephoartigasia, the only horned rodent ever, and the “Lazarus” rock rat thought extinct for 11 million years. Plus: the truth about rats and the Black Death, Jack Black the royal rat catcher, how colonialism accidentally spread rats across the globe, and why New York City rats are literally evolving in real time.

Oh! And I wrote a book, so definitely make sure to grab it—Epic Earth out now!

Yk what, this really makes me appreciate the border agents that make sure you don’t bring in harmful plants that could become invasive. That’s the only time you’ll hear me appreciate border agents.

No one cares about voles, chipmunks or squirrels. Because they don't (generally) invade your home and live off you. I know sometimes they can but generally, they earn an honest living. There's even a species of mouse called the house mouse. Go back to the forest and find food like a real animal.

First thought I love rats I had one as a pet. They’re actually nicer than most mice.
Second thought I wish pigeons weren’t vermin because we used to use them and have them as pets. humans domesticated them and then we just threw them away so that’s a little sad.

While I adore rats (had two as pets consecutively when I was a kid, born in the Year of the Rat, etc), I do feel like I understand the hatred. They once killed half of Europe and a big percentage of Asia. Yes, technically it was the plague, but they helped.

I don't agree with it. But I understand.

Rats make wonderful pets. I loved my 3 boys so much. They don’t live long enough, but the short time they gave me I won’t ever forget. RIP Merry, Pippin, and Faramir.
