Mortal Kombat is a fighting game released in arcades in 1992 that almost immediately garnered notice for the violence of it.
But that was just the beginning, both of a global brand, and of the controversies and lawsuits surrounding Mortal Kombat.

17:12 $50 in 1993 is a little over $110 today! It's easy to forget how expensive games used to be.

im nostalgic at all but the feeling i used to get 35 years ago from seeing kung fu in the arcade or street fighter 1 in a greyhound station. then seen SF 2…..amazing. then of course seeing MK2 on the naval base for the first time……..reminded me of pit fighter…the excitement is indescribable. we couldnt stop thinking about it. it was as dope as final fight 2 coming with certain SNES systems. f zero too, great times

SNES version definitely doesn't play better than the Genesis version. Genesis plays like the arcade version.

Cartoon film mk legends scorpion's revenge was banned in st petersberg russia because of its content , the 80s set mk catrtoon film cage match had dirty dancing actress jenifer grey voice herself , in the 70s comic book master jack kirby created villian kobra who first appeared in his own comic.

I’ve said I want Scorpion and Sub-Zero in Smash Bros (without the gore) so you can pit them against Ken and Ryu from Street Fighter

Tiny correction: The SNES version of MK did not play as well as Sega's, it was the exact opposite. The SNES had terrible input lag and missed inputs, which actually drove me to buy a Genesis with 6 button controller. The SNES had exponentially better graphics, but the Genesis version was much closer to the arcade in playability. MK2 and MK3 played awesome on the SNES, though.

Small note, Genesis doesn't play worse. It's actually more responsive and feels better. It just looks and sounds worse. Particularly it looks worse because of the fewer colors, lower pixel count, and lower fps. The big issue is that the stock Genesis controller is a 3 button controller, so in order to play it properly you had to get a 6 button controller.

Seeing people get killed on the news was ok. It was totally ok that we put gulf war 1 on tv in families living rooms. I remember watching those night vision videos of the then new laser and gps guided munitions. Theyd show the video feed from the bombs as they fell and cutting to a static camera that caught the explosion. The news channels of the day were more than happy to show off all the newest of uncle sams toys as they reduced the Iraqi military to regrets and memories. But a video game where you can yank someones head off predator style with their spine dangling, well that sir is too much!!!

I was 9 when Mortal Kombat came out 😅. And within 6 months there were so many rumors around what was in that game that it was like Shrodinger's murder simulator (spelling?). When my aunt heard id gotten a copy for the genesis she thought there was porn in the game😅. I showed her the game without entering the blood code and she was like "thats it?" To which i replied "yup uh huh"😂

Parents are ridiculous. I’ve played mortal kombat since the early 90s and I’m not violent. I’m a standing member of society. They just wanted something to bitch about

The game was controversial to say the least with the blood, gore and fatalities.

Just a couple of corrections:
– Midway wanted Van Damme for a Bloodsport adaptation, not Universal Soldier.
– Boon disliked how in other fighting games characters got dizzy DURING the match and then suggested to implement the mechanic at the end for the fatalities.
