He did miss the part of the first few centuries spies just had their head cut off some times by the side that sent them for reporting the wrong information or just not what the person or government wanted to hear. Modern day ones they are much better but still do not sleep with the entire group like James Bond did in 007 movies. It is more so that they walk past a place and drop or place a sensor that will collect information. Depending on what it is collecting and where it is they might have to go back to pick it up later. They are usually not the people who see the bad guys just the people who talk to the bad guys who the government wants to find out about.
How it works in reality is boring so Hollywood like in all movies made it more action driven for 007 and other spy movies.
