The ‘Fender Issue’, Ozzy’s Avatar and The Universe: Comments Day!

Justin Hawkins Rides Again | June 4, 2026

I’m on my way home from a busy week in Europe and London, but some of you have asked for my views on Fender, the Ozzy Osbourne Avatar and why I was at the Masters of The Universe on Thursday – so I thought I’d answer on my way to the airport! Keep the comments coming; I read them all – even the ones obsessing over my teeth….. Also, I apologise for the gum. Really.

Rick Beato said it best; "It comes down to quality of the product". Fender has dropped the ball and the market has picked it up and offered better quality S-style guitars at lower prices.

There wasn't a single part of Ozzy's life that wasn't monetized. Why would he death be any different? I have no interest in paying to see avatars of dead people!

It's worth pointing out that the design of the Strat body shape fell into the public domain a LONG time ago, though they still have a trademark on the exact headstock shape. They're ghouls for chasing small companies over the now-literally-generic body shape.

I agree with Fender. I personally think it is pretty lazy to, as a new guitar brand, take an already established design, stick your logo on the headstock, then get all 'power to the people' when reminded that your guitars are not genuinely original designs.

you can not compare the design of acoustic instruments to electric guitars because acoustic instrument designs are not patented. when it comes to the electric guitar, there has been patents all along since its inception. I do agree with Fender in some aspects, there are too many companies and builders building the exact same thing minus the subtle differences in the headstocks…it dilutes the market and if patents are going to be violated then what is the point of even having them…samsung is not making an iphone and swapping the logos, they have distinct designs. A hammer can not be patented, but an electric vibrating hammer with a switch on the bottom left can. I dont understand why people are so mad at fender….they actually put up with this for decades but now its out of hand and they have to exercise patent laws to defend themselves….its how the market works and i imagine fender wants to stay in business . I am not a defender of corporations nor do i have any involvment with any, but violations have to be adressed always .

The Strat shape is incredibly simple and generic. Imagine Taylor trademarking the Dreadnought body shape. Likewise Gibson has no right to the LP shape, it's as generic as it gets, basically a folk acoustic body shape but solid wood.

I grew up literally down the street from Fender. I had a GNL endorsement. The Strat shape is public domain.
Leo Fender is the creator and intellectual owner of the Strat. He never went after clones. The design has been around for damn near 70 years. It is truly public domain. Private equity firms have no business raping the spirits of the masters.

If Fender would build a USA strat with the quality and detail of a Suhr or Tom Anderson, etc… there would be no need for Suhr of Tom Anderson guitars… or any other direct reproduction-done-better knockoff of a stratocaster. And I fully feel that the others are "knockoffs". I don't hold it against Fender for going after direct copiers of their actual body shape. Fender left the door open for this based on their own behavior. I figure they can close it if they want to, but the result better be lower prices for better guitars. And it WOULD make the guitar market more diverse… because a whole bunch of companies would stop making the exact same guitar. lol.

to me the most interesting thing that's come out of the Fender fiasco is the fact that esteemed artists are confessing the best strats they've played are not made by the company in question, lol. I think it's a big backlash for Fender..

On the Fender Strat thing. Are they able to do the same with the Telecaster and Offset shapes? Or is that something different?
Are they just starting with the strat because I'm assuming it's the most sold shape.

The Osbourne family will be milking Ozzy for all he is worth, even in death, now their main money making machine has gone.. the family has zero shame.

Justin, regarding AI avatars: have you seen movie named Futuristic Congress with Robin Wright Penn in main role?
    I recommend it to everyone.
    Have a blast! 👍🏻👏🏻💪🏻🍻🍻🙋🏼‍♂️

All entertainment will be holographic as touring logistics become untenable and a major PR blunder by Fender. The second hand guitar market is flooded… have fun kids ✌️

Guess what the fender already made a huge mistake! They didn’t do this when it started !!! I believe a judge is going to say you waited 70 yrs to do this. Nah doesn’t work that way
