The Entire X Men Timeline Explained

Looper | January 23, 2026

The X-Men movies are a lot like the X-Men comics: dense, exciting, and often confusing. But for a while before the MCU was developed, they came to define exactly what a multi-film superhero franchise could be. The ongoing narrative of persecution and perseverance went backward and forward through time, splitting off into new realities, and occasionally flying off into outer space.

It all becomes a little hard to keep track of, so here’s the entire X-Men timeline, explained.

#XMen #MCU #Superhero

X-Men: First Class | 0:00
Trask Industries | 1:45
X-Men Origins: Wolverine | 2:50
X-Men | 4:31
X2: X-Men United | 5:55
X-Men: The Last Stand | 7:18
The Wolverine | 8:45
A new timeline | 10:12
X-Men: Apocalypse | 11:32
X-Men: Dark Phoenix | 12:38
Deadpool & Deadpool 2 | 14:00
The New Mutants | 15:29
Logan | 16:39

i would see it differently, the timeline logan takes place is in the timeline of the first 3 movies, where charles is killed by jean and resurects via his twin brother. it is also the timeline where the sentinals happend but without the saviour of wolverine, they are the same timeline with just 2 different endings in it. also all the movies after first class takes place in this original timeline.
the timeline splits after the first class movie in the original timeline i talked about above, and the new timeline is where logan travels back in time to eradicate the sentinals and stop mystic from killing task.

all the movies never happend in the new timeline, the logan ending and the sentinel endings are just 2 possible endings for the original timeline.
the new timeline created by the timetravel of logan is where we have never seen a movie from, that is the only timeline where nothing bad happens no bad ending nothing just normal usual life for everyone without the action or bad guys we know, like in reality normal life is not action bad guys here and there it just goes on normaly day in and day out. after first class in this timeline everything moves on normaly no wars no deaths nothing just peacefull times forever. the perfect ending for the x-men franshise.

You missed one point, logan, in the new timeline was seen in apocalypse, what happened after that?
Also, does the 'logan' movie belong to original timeline or new timeline? Cause original timeline was supposed to be erased after 1973 as their purpose was to create a new timeline.
    I'm confused here.

This is why I hate X-Men last stand. They made the movie as if they wasn’t gonna continue it by killing everybody the hell off then you sit right here I don’t even know what the hell y’all going with the franchise and you throw origins out then first class and then the shit just get confusing.

It still didn’t make sense in days future past mystique can only shape shift to other people, but she can’t take on a powers so it made no sense that the sentinels was able to gain the other mutant powers

a lot has been left out… like the literal prof X coming back to life. its at the end of X3 last stand. the end credit scene shows prof X mind back into a comatose person and him having taken that body for himself. it is also explained that charles didn't really changed back to his original body, he is still within the old man body, but makes everyone around him see him as charles and not the other body. so when we arrive at the end credit of the wolverine. we know how and why. its also explained that the cure is temporary, not permanent. as angel got his powers back, rogue got her powers back and magneto got his powers back. its not "implied" that its not affecting him, its explained that the cure is temporary. if you want to leanr more about leech, the kid which generates the cure, you really should as his powers are only temporary to begin with. as for the timeline explained… most of this is completely wrong… reason being that the xmen do play with timeline a lot and so waht happens in one movie might not be what hapenned in the previous ones. there is no holes in the story, you are simply seeing the multiverse as it should be, that is different branches of the same tree. days of future past is a comic book that spans the entirety of a generation, we're talking over 70 decades of timeline. so what you saw of days of future past and xmen first class… is not even close to being the same branches. technically they shouldn't be connecting. but then why is kitty pride able to send people into past selves… she is not ! she is sending their consciousness into their selves from other branches. branches all ends up going back to the big trunk of the tree. but what they do, is not rewritting time… they are simply creating new timelines (branches). so basically there is a branch where the xmen all failed and the sentinels won. as a side note, there is another show that goes into these timelines… Legion!
but again, multiple timelines means multiple branches so there is no contradictions anywhere.

The Gifted TV series also fits in the canon after The Wolverine and before Days of Future Past, it doesnt contradict anything, it adds to the sentinal lore and also features one of the characters from the film, Blink

No, no, no. The timeline is only in the Marvel Comics, back in the '70's where the X Men showed up first. Original team was : Cyclops, Jean Gray, Angel, Beast and Snowman. YES, Snowman. Later on he learned to turn into ice and became Iceman.. Google up early X Men comics and you can see for yourselves. Now it's all frickin' Wolverine, because the '90's kids found his claws cool.
