Rocky's trip to Tau Ceti from Erid only took 3 years from Rocky's perspective, but it took around 11 years from the perspective of Earth and Erid. So if you're looking at Rocky's timeline, he left Erid about 49 years before the book/movie begin, but from Earth (and Erid)'s timeline it's more like 58 years.

Loved the book – the movie was confusing enough that I really wonder how many get it if they weren't thus prepared. I also thought there was too much humor – taking away from the drama.

Bait. Plot re-cap. Almost nothing on the time-line (like how much time has passed?).

The one thing that bothers me that they changed and would’ve had more of an emotional impact is Grace does not have enough food when he goes to save Rocky… so he understands that he’s going to end up dying at Erid. And he’s made peace with that. Which makes the sacrifice even more impactful. In the movie, Grace says he has several years worth of food. Which totally removes the whole sacrifice plot.

A great family movie ..
It is Not a serious sci fi complex story for just adults
..our 12 yo followed 90 percent of story and loved the alien rock crab ..annoying and childish at times for the adults but kids loved Rocky the alien…a very high quality family adventure from the Spielberg format.. a great time !!.

Isn't anyone else bothered by the final reveal? SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT!
I loved the movie, I loved the movie. But I could not understand why and it still bothers me that Grace's right was violated and forced to go against hi will. I do not remember any movie where someone's autonomy is ultimately not respected and violated so violently. It is like a bunch of doctors decide that you have the healthiest organs and decide to operate on you against your will to harvest the organs to save 12 people who need those organs. I am used to movies where the individual's autonomy and decisions are respected or the individual eventually decided to do the heroic act. But being drugged against your will while you are actively refusing to volunteer, I don't understand why not more people are upset about this, or why the book or movie used this plot. What is the meaning or unique contribution to the story that Grace was forced to volunteer and his choices taken away?
