The idea originally was that Palpatine had transcended the need for physical combat. The idea that his powers could be defended against with a Light Saber is ABSURD! The whole point was that Luke was in over his head against the superior trans-physical powers of the Emperor, which Obi Wan had warned him about, and that he was saved by his father's love, not by his combat prowess. Yoda lifted the ship out of the swamp with his mind. Turning him into a light saber fighter was also ridiculous. The idea that Palpatine could bring down spaceships with his force powers, but have them turned by Rae's light saber is once again completely ridiculous. The Emperor squaring off against Yoda with light sabers is completely ridiculous. The second and third trilogies were about pandering to the audience with physical combat scenes that made no sense in the original trilogy, which is why the later trilogies sucked in comparison. Same with Jackson's Hobbit trilogy, which trashed Tolkien's carefully balanced array of forces with cheap parlor trick magic and combat scenes. GAR-BAGE!

How could Palpatine come back after being vaporized in the death stars destruction? Episode 9's villian should have been Darth Plagueis, having found the power of regeneration & eternal life. He wasn't vaporized to ash like Sidious.
