It's pretty dull really. Sonically it's ok. Essentially, The Doors, more or less, recorded the same set every night. This set differs with a couple of non essential songs – big deal. I bought it and I wonder why, to be honest. Why does this chap approach everything as if it's something akin to actually witnessing a divine event?

The Matrix was NOT in Los Angeles; it was in San Francisco. I've long treasured the recordings of Grace Slick with her first band, the Great Society, made at the Matrix in 1965 and released by Columbia later in the 1960's, including the first version of "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love."

Been rumored for many years. I hope they're better than the so called second generation that I used to have. Apparently The Doors "Bright Midnight" label who released those with Rhino is no more and I didn't find those recordings on YouTube anymore either. I found a copy on Discogs and I'd bet some are available through Ebay.
The story was that the first gen were considerably better than the second. September eh? The Doors in their purest form in my opinion. Might these sound as good as the Absolutely Live" recordings? I hope so.
Interesting short piece on those recordings on Wikipedia as well as one on the Matrix (club).

Interesting. Way back in the days when you'd scour college record stores looking for bootlegs, I acquired a 4 cd box set of the Matrix shows, featuring material not available on the Doors first official release of the Matrix shows (though not including the two new tracks). They sound great, but I pre-ordered just to have a first-gen copy of a sorely missing time period of Doors history. It is rare to get good quality recordings from this period when they were putting on the best live shows.

I own an old "Live At The Matrix 67"bootleg tape with a middling- awful sound that could have something to do with this new stuff. The tracks might be some of the original recordings once released as a vinyl album.

And just when I thought I had everything from my favorite American band, I might have known there’d be more. But thanks Barry for the review. Definitely sounds intriguing enough to look into.

A short comment about the psychedelic aesthetic. Yes, there are many bands who have got the sound on vinyl. The Doors, The Grateful Dead, and the Jefferson airplane et all, all captured the effects of taking recreational drugs. And yes it is always good to have that immersive sense of a quart of music brimming over the pint pot of the format it is in. But for me psychedelia is a space/place in my head which I know is there and when I view the world from there, the world is a more interesting, and much more open, place…. …so good, once thought lost, recordings are one thing but how we think is more important.
