The Deadman’s Switch Hostage Crisis | Tales From the Bottle

Qxir | January 8, 2026

What do you do when any attempt to take out the hostage taker will result in the detonation of a bomb that he’s attached to?

“The Cokeville Elementary School hostage crisis occurred on Friday, May 16, 1986, in Cokeville, Wyoming, United States, when former town marshal David Young, 43, and his wife Doris Young, 47, took 136 children and 18 adults hostage at Cokeville Elementary School.
David Young entered the school with his wife transporting a large gasoline-filled device that appeared to be a bomb. The couple corralled a large group of students and teachers into a single classroom. David attached the bomb trigger to his wrist and threatened the group that he might, at any time, move his arm and ignite the bomb.
After a two-and-a-half hour standoff, the children were becoming restless, so the teachers preoccupied the kids in the form of movies, games, prayer, and books. David became increasingly agitated, and decided to leave the room. Before leaving the room, David attached the bomb’s detonation device to his wife’s wrist.
When the children became increasingly loud, Doris Young began begging the teachers to settle the group down. At one point she lifted her arm sharply and the bomb went off prematurely, injuring Doris while David was out of the room. Returning to the scene, David shot his wife, then himself. All the hostages escaped, though 79 were later hospitalized with burns and injuries, the majority of which were severe.”

I illegally downloaded the film when it was released and, although I'm extremely skeptical of the religious concepts (Mormon community) I still found it somewhat entertaining.
I also huffed gasoline in my teens, so the hallucinations, along with shock and doctrine brainwashing makes more sense than the message the film tried to deliver.

The think with gasoline is, it doesn't explode that much (compared to real explosives), the fumed explode, but gasoline just burns. It looks impresive, because it makes quite fireball, but huge fireball doesn't mean strong bomb: it is created, because after the explosion. Gasoline is dispersed into air, and burns at the moment it can get the oxygen to burn: most explosives have source of oxygen mixed in, so the reaction can be much faster The shockwave must have been fairly weak, and it takes some time to burn someone so much he dies, and with first responders at scene, the fires can be put down fairly quickly and injured can be treated fast.
The real miracle is, that the man made shitty bomb.

Well fuck time to get the bottle. You fucking mad lad. I fucking hate you now. Holy shit. Don't play with my emotions like that. I stopped at the bomb going off. Now I'm drunk and only now do I see that what I thought had happened didn't happen. This was mean.
