The Falkland islands (Las Islas Malvinas actually) were never in control of Great Britain previous to the attack. Portuguese explorers were the first people to discover them. They willingly gave them to the Spanish crown who fought the French diplomatically for them.
After Argentina independized the islands were widely recognized as Argentinian territory. Then came the British who decided that the islands were a tactical advantage and took them by force. That's what actually happened.
(Also, they took them by sinking a carrier called "General Belgrano" which was outside of the designated warzone. That constitutes a war crime).
