Catalina Island’s deer are being eradicated and the internet is losing it. Introduced 100 years ago for hunting tourism, these mule deer are now threatening 60+ species found nowhere else on Earth. So why can’t we just relocate them, add a predator, or keep hunting? Turns out it’s way more complicated than that. The full story on science, sentiment, and the “Bambi problem.”

Deer also will eat baby birds, bones, and other infant animals that are in reach for calcium and other minerals that the deer can't get in their diet. It's called osteophagia. Osteo- meaning bone. Phagia/phage- meaning eater/devourer. So not even the other animals are safe!

Just change the word Deer to Republican and those "Streamers" you were listening to will all be ok with killing everyone of them, fuck then they'll volunteer to kill them all for you.
These are the same EXACT people who we're and are STILL celebrating the horrible disgusting murder and assassination of a Father in 8k video being streamed for the world to see and then played on repeat for months as they cheered for joy. So Sorry if I don't give a shit what they have to say about anything. They lost their right to ever give their input on anything in our country.
Love your videos Lindsay and glad you made a video with some common sense logic laid out in it. But come on, find some better content to indulge in next time beside insane domestic terrorist who hate America and think 9/11 was a good thing.

i think the issue with avalon is that avalon is a city.
and while i love and adore cities, city people put a lot of stock in animals like deer that are literally a dime a dozen.
im from the mountains 2 hrs from la. we have deer in our yard every day. a few years ago a doe gave birth under one of our trees two years in a row (until we got a big dog)
like YES they're so cute, but they're invasive. if they want to see deer just go to the mainland, they're literally everywhere
and i understand it sounds callous but growing up in the mountains you learn how fragile ecosystems are. i remember when thistle was a major problem. i remember people changing from planting whatever to california specific wildflowers
we shake our heads at the people who move to the top of the mountain and complain about coyotes and bears
we have a responsibility to the land we occupy and frankly it's selfish for the people on catalina to dictate how the ecology should be sustained. especially over a mule deer the most populous large herbivore on the west coast

I'd say just shoot the deer from helicopters.
Do the original plan.

Have the endemic species considered that they had millions of years to evolve to be cuter but they were slacking while the deer were cutemaxxing

You should do your homework about the Island Fox as it was most likely brought out by the native Americans 7500 years ago. pm me if you wan the paper, think 2015

The best thing about the pigs is that they werent cane toads, as was done in Hawaii and Australia.

Deer are essentially rats with antlers.

Maybe im being stupid but why dont they just put a couple deer in a zoo or conservation area. Somewhere humane and size appropriate of course. But then some people can still see and enjoy the deer and we can get rid of them on the rest of the island. I 100% agree they need to go, but I also sympathize with the locals. Idk somebody tell me why that couldn't work. Maybe deer dont do well in captivity.

Let the poor people hunt again! First the pigs were killed off then the goat, now the deer, killing wasn't a problem on the island, it may have been a problem when it comes to the abalone the lobster, but poor people need to eat too, and it sucks that if you never eat meat unless you kill it yourself, thats how it used to be on the island. but now the food is illegal to kill, and have become a problem.

Perhaps a temporary farm/restaurant could be set up that only intakes doe and sells as venison or jerky. The population can be monitored and controlled in this manner. A new business with a new food source will help the island residents and boost economy. Widdle down the population and strike a balence or keep going until no doe left if the vegetation is still suffering.

> Deer imported expressly for the purpose of getting shot
> Deer destroying the local ecosystem
> Conservationists want to get rid of the deer by shooting them
> "Nooooo don't shoot the deer that were expressly imported to get shot, that would be cruuueeeeel"
What? WHAT?

My opinion, trust the experts and cull the deer. Use helicopters if that is actually the best option.
I have lost patience with people who don’t actually care about ecosystem health, or nowadays ecosystem collapse, but then get all bothered about controlling an Invasive species because they can’t stand killing animals.
Care for nature requires you to care about the natural systems that support the pretty life you most enjoy.
Scientists worked very hard to decide on what the best plan is. Trust them, implement it.

i remember the exact event that shifted my perspective on hunting– i've always loved animals since i was a little kid, and my uncle (back then) hunted recreationally, which i thought was mean/bad/evil/unnecessary. i thought hunters were bad guys for killing innocent animals. then for an english class i had to interview someone about a topic and write a persuasive essay; i decided i would write about why hunting is bad, and interviewed my uncle about it. he explained to me how because fewer wolves where we live (because of humans killing them) there are too many deer, and they need something to keep the population in check otherwise they'll out-compete every other species. he told me some of the guys he hunts with don't get paid very much at their jobs, and they use the meat they kill to feed their families. that conversation gave me an entirely new perspective on hunting, and i ended up completely changing the argument of my essay.
i like what was said in the video about how conservation isn't about protecting every individual animal, it's about making the necessary choices to support/protect the ecosystem as a whole.

If hunting only takes 13% per year, how do they think they can live-capture more than 13% per year (much less 60%) and relocate them? That's ridiculous.
