The Best/Worst of Shane MacGowan | Televised Éireann
A beautiful mind seemingly bent on destroying itself. These are Shane MacGowan’s best and worst moments; sometimes it is difficult to tell the difference between the two.
“Shane Patrick Lysaght MacGowan (born 25 December 1957) is an English-born Irish singer, songwriter, and musician. He is best known as the lead singer and songwriter of Celtic punk band the Pogues. He was also a member of the Nipple Erectors and Shane MacGowan and the Popes, as well as producing his own solo material and working on collaborations with artists such as Kirsty MacColl, Joe Strummer, Nick Cave, Steve Earle, Sinéad O’Connor, and Ronnie Drew.”

Update 30/11/23: I have just learned of Shane's passing. The world is a lesser place without his devious creativity and raw lyricism. If you've never listened to his work, here's a song to get you started:

His excessive and destructive lifestyle somehow made his music more authentic. He wasn't playing an image. He owned who he was.

Apparently the floor of his flat with littered with paper with lyrics on them. Heart breaking to think how many songs he may have composed and forgotten that we will never hear.

When I worked at a tavern/restaurant, a group of men came in, and some of them were from Ireland and some from Scotland. I could NOT hardly do my job because I fell in love with their accents! And me, I'm from Kentucky and have a southern draw, and they kept wanting to hear me talk!!!😅

Shane seems like a really cool guy. I love Irish music, the country, the accent, just about everything! My absolute favorite song is Whiskey in the Jar!

I wonder what you meant with the squirrel lyric being offensive, a bit confused. Is it a UK/IE thing? and it’s a terrible shame that he passed, thanks for teaching about him and playing his music.

He was as talented an artist as Brian Wilson, Billie Holliday, Paul McCartney, Bob Marley, or Joey Ramone, and one and a bit years on, I still miss him. Though it is a MIRACLE he lived as long as he did.

Now that I have ~7 years of dry reflection on my 26 years of severe alchoholism, the depth and breadth of Shane's lyrics and character just keep swelling; it makes perfect sense to half my genes.
He's part of my list of inspiring people who reminded me with their words that I didn't have to die from alchoholism, like my dad, just because it's traditional; maybe other things were possible.
If there is a comprehensible afterlife (that I'm part of), and Shane and Phil Lynnot and James Joyce and Oscar Wilde happened to have a long pub session, what would that conversation be like in general..?..
I guess I haven't listened to his duet with Nick Cave for a few decades.🥲 They expressed something sincere about the human condition, it has meant a lot, lo these many years; trying to get back to the sunny side of the street.
