In the space of just 7 short years, The Beatles were able to produce some of the most inventive music ever. To achieve this, they also needed to work unlike anyone else.

The Beatles were formed by God.
Really.
Think about it.
His Son was born in obscurity.
He makes common people His messenger.
And He made four 20-something hooligans from an obscure place in England make music magic.
That's how He works.
There will NEVER be a music group like that again.

it was so inventive, as long as they had hundreds of hours of american music (specifically black american music) to steal from.

Just to be clear, they did plenty of thinking about details (drum sounds etc.) but knew how to turn the editor off to allow for flow in places like writing sessions, studios and stages

John in the early days was always the one pushing everyone and to get the songs finished. After the death of Brian Epstein, Paul saw the band losing steam and John had already lost his drive. Then Paul tried to take the reigns and push everyone to keep going except they didn't respond too well after a while.

It’s a myth that not being able to read or write music is an advantage, or that music theory stifles creativity. Those things are tools to help analyze what you hear, but if reading music or learning theory ruined creativity, then Beethoven, Chopin and Debussy wouldn’t have composed anything.

6:10 "The Beatles are perhaps the most famous rule breakers in all of music."
Sorry to burst your bubble there, but the most famous rule breaker is also the most famous musician in human history. Take a moment quietly and you'll realize who he is.

Romans 6.23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Mark 1.15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

their state of flow was fully a result of them having the best studio w the best producer & engineers & as much money as anyone at that time. Don't overlook the benefactorial enablement of George Martin & Brian Epstein on that flow.

The Beatles maybe didn’t take music theory or know how to write music is true they couldn’t take measured paper and write down the notation that way. But they definitely knew chords and would sometimes jot down the progression if they couldn’t remember it. There was a whole story of George learning the G7 and teaching the boys so I have to respectfully disagree when you make it seem like they didn’t know chords. Knowing theory or notation isn’t the same as not knowing chords or progression

So they fire their first drummer, for not being that good. Seems to me that JL was a raging narcissist. Pete Best was scapegoated. If we use the slightest logic the question comes to mind: why then did Best still get on with other bands if he was so sh*tty?

Academics in universities around the world probably secretly hate the Beatles for their ignorance.
They proved you don't have to spend 10's, 100's of thousands of dollars to get rich.
Just work hard no matter what your hand finds to do.

They knew a lot about music, they certainly adhered to scales modes and keys and certainly knew when to change key, borrow chords or change styles in the middle of a song. This was not by accident, one of them had some technical ability, John played piano, and would have known much of this, so as Paul….. when they say they could not read music, i believe what they meant was that they could not read music fast enough to play live from sheet music, or write down in musical notation what they had produce.

That use of working within limitations makes me think a lot of Brian Eno's "Oblique Strategies." While they are different on a presentation level, they do encourage the same thing: use limits to increase your range of ideas. Doing things like "change instrument roles," "emphasize repetition," "use an old idea," "use fewer notes," etc. are all constraints that force you to think laterally and inspire more creativity through that limitation. In an age where the access to tools is a lot greater than it was during the Beatles heyday, it can be very useful to use things like Oblique Strategies to force yourself to think more creatively and not get overwhelmed by that limitless access.

David, thanks for your thoughtful insights and commentary. I was in high school and college during most of their recording career. What captivated my friends and I was the constant evolution of The Beatles. I remember going back to college after the summer break in 1966 and one of my buddies had a new copy of Yesterday and Today. He put it on the record player and we sat mostly in silence through the first side astounded at how different it was from Rubber Soul. Drive My Car, And Your Bird Can Sing, with that killer guitar intro. The Beatles were our conductors of life in the late 60’s.

Rush were the same way. Neither Geddy nor Alex had formal training, and neither could read music. I think Neil could, but Alex and Geddy handled the musical composition and Neil played with what they came up with and wrote lyrics to suit it. As Geddy says in his autobiography: "If we'd know what we were SUPPOSED to be doing, we couldn't have done most of what we did." (I'm paraphrasing but that's the gist of it.)

my ex boss told us that the real education is after school. he also told us that his brother is illiterate. yet, he is a boss of his own company. what I'm saying is that just because you know how to write music or technically good playing instruments but if the talents aren't there, you might as well just be a music teacher. Doesn't mean you shouldn't study though. it's just that some guys have all the luck. lol

The fact they couldn’t read or write music tells you so much about the role that Sir George Martin played in their success. No George. No Beatles. Oh yes they could write the songs, but the “magic” the genius that brought it all together was George Martin. Think Eleanor Rigby and the quartet backing, or In my life and the middle piano part, or the dozens of other tracks that HIS genius provided. I have said it once and I’ll say it again…. No George Martin…. No Beatles…as they evolved. Thanks George. R.I.P. I for one, will remember you. ❤️POSTED BY DAVID HARVEY.

They were not great musicians they basically like coal miners they showed up worked and finished there work. They where not the greatest musicians they where workers that played the music not perfect. Q jones said they were worse, I agree they don’t have the greatest guitars, drummer, singing but they match everything together because they where used to going out every night and playing at night clubs so I agree it’s perfect but their harmonies where prefect so they matched each other so they had the it factor.

The Beatles are the single most influential musicians of the 20th century and beyond.
The Beatles are when people stopped dancing and started listening to the music.
