This is my favorite Band album and one of my overall favorite albums ever. Whispering Pines would be my favorite song of theirs. Richard Emanuel was a tortured soul but this song feels like he’s reaching for something peaceful. Even more touching in retrospect when you know his story. Great to see you hitting this one up!! Thx!

Want to hear them at their peak? Listen to the Rock Of Ages live album. It ….is…. PERFECTION in performance. So much tension and loose ensemble style, so much swagger and a perfect delivery of their best tunes. No lengthy Dylan vocals at all, but they added a killer horn section. It’s a desert island disc for me.

The Band is a phenomenal album. I have a vinyl copy, the remastered CD with extra tracks and the 50th anniversary CD edition with Woodstock performance. One of my favorite songs is Whispering Pines. I was just a tiny little kid when this album was first released, but definitely remember Joan Baez’s version of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down when it was a hit. 😎

Yea, if the Band made this music today they would be punished on Reddit for 'self promotion' and forced to gather all their Patreon funds together to pay for the best cameras money can buy so they can stream on Twitch while talking over their music. That's progress. It is no wonder the youth of today find solace in dissecting the socio-cultural elements on display here. These elements have largely transformed themselves into libidinally-driven acts on full display on random chat apps, where guitars have been replaced with phalluses. We can't talk about these things, of course, because they do not exist. Refer to your grandfathers: what soul and intellect they had…..pretty good imaginations too.

So, is "Up On Cripple Creek" a sequel song to the old time banjo tune "Cripple Creek", with the infamous line, Cripple Creek girls about half grown, jump on a man like a dog on a bone. (This was Peter Tork's solo number in Monkee's sets).

The first time I heard this album I was driving through the Catskills with my parents and my brother taking a weekend away. My dad loved this album and brought it for the family road trip.
I was a kid who was a sponge for all this rock and roll.
This was different for my ears. It was a bolt of lightning through my subconscious. This and Music from Big Pink were the philosophers stone to me for years.
Today, both of those albums and their later, LIVE Rock Of Ages change my sense of space.
They are completely transcendent.
Life albums. Blood and breath.

Woodstock: The Lost Performances, does have The Weight on it. Not sure it ever came out on anything other than VHS.

I'm not so sure about the generations concept. Its more a media creation than a reality. There are indeed movements that happen first at a certain time that have primarily folks of a certain age getting into them , but its not everybody of that age and probably not the majority. I was at the Philly Spectrum waiting for the doors to be opened. I saw a civilian, a punk, a new wave guy and a hippy walk by. They were all the same age.

Thanks for that!!! Every so often the algorithm demons toss an unasked for video at me, and one such abomination was a git listing 10 albums he hates; The Band was on that list. Anything that approaches "Americana" or "Country Rock" is sniffed at and his takedown was uninformed and ugly; not a comment on the soulfulness of the vocals or the playing, just some backhanded compliments about how Levon was a great rockabilly drummer. Every few months he also feels the need to make fun of Astral Weeks and Pet Sounds; why spend that much effort…Ya know, I've spent more time on this guy than I should have. Anyway, loved the video; thanks again.

Unfaithful Servant is the best. I feel like there’s more ambiguity in it, though. The mournful tone leads me to believe that he and the lady may have been sharing a bed, and were perhaps caught in the act. “Farewell to my other side” doesn’t read to me as “farewell to that job I liked as a servant.” It reads as “farewell to the person who makes me feel whole.” It feels more like love loss than job loss. But there’s ambiguity there.

When I was in college, our History of Commercial Music professor spent 3 class periods showing us "The Last Waltz" and I didn't get it. When the 90s alt-country boom happened, I tried them again, and I still didn't get it. About 10 years ago I tried them again and it was just beautiful. I now have no clue what it was I didn't "get" before but I'm sure glad I kept trying.

Very good job in presenting one of the best albums ever made, by its nature it transcends Rock alone, the songs are timeless but of a time and era at the same time. This is an album PLAYED not tracked then assembled cut and pasted together as is done today. Sure there was some overdubbing but it was almost entirely recorded instrumentally live in a room and a studio. The songs are concise and there is very little soloing longer than a verse and chorus. It is ensemble playing at its best. The Night They Drove Old Dixie down in my opinion is one of the greatest American songs ever written. The first time I heard the chorus the hairs on the back of my neck stood up on end , just awesome. Probably the best performance in the “Last Waltz” extravaganza is LEVON’S of it, even though he was skeptical of the whole idea of a final concert he tore the house down with that performance.

Worth noting, the Band’s set is also included in the big Woodstock boxed set “Back To The Garden” that came out in 2019. Covers the whole thing, aside from two Sha Na Na songs (a tragedy!) and two Hendrix songs due to rights clearances.

Wonderful job Abby!! (and Vinyl Friday "bridge")- I believe this is quite possibly the greatest assemblage of talent in modern music- (well that aren't The Beatles!!!!)

Across the pond, Procul Harum took that same instrumentation, piano, organ, guitar, bass, and drums to a very different place. You can get a certain warmth and fullness with two pre-synth keyboardists in the mix.

I have to recommend Levon Helm’s RCO Allstars album. Produced by Eddie “Close To The Edge” Offord, and the gathering of musicians is ridiculous… Dr. John, most of the members of the Blues Brothers backing band & Booker T and the MGs, Paul Butterfield of harp and the great Howard Johnson on Tuba & Bari-sax. Robbie Robertson makes a cameo guitar appearance. Sort of a partner album to The Muddy Waters Woodstock album. You just want to be there hanging out. Oh! And listen to Taj Mahal (Live) The Real Thing… a whole Tuba/lower brass horn section featuring John Simon and Howard Johnson… a sound low enough to match Taj’s vocal power.

A Fabulous Album.
Cripple Creek and King Harvest are 2 blueprints on how you play a Funk groove on bass and drums.
The entire album is a lesson on how to play multiple instruments and sing lead while providing harmony vocals at the same time.
This entire album is a tutorial of how to put incredible lyrics, storytelling and poetry to absolutely beautiful music.
