"Music From Big Pink" is a truly great and unique album, but I think that The Band's second album is the single greatest rock album ever made. it's what rock'n'roll would have sounded like, had it somehow magically been invented in the Nineteenth Century.

At a time when popular music was the lifeblood, brainstorm and guiding light of my generation, the Band were top rung influencers. Like the Beatles and the Byrds, the Band was al about the songs. Your enthusiasm is fetching, Abigail.

Very very good!! I am Canadian and have loved “The Band” for 50 years. Yours is an insightful review!

The Basement Tapes weren't really completed in 1967-68, a 3rd of the songs don't even have Dylan on them and were recorded later & the other 2/3 were overdubbed in the 70s. The whole "recorded with Dylan in 1967 and not released until 1975" story is a fabrication.

Was “synthesizer“ actually credited on Music From Big Pink? I’ve always thought the “sound effects” were more or less organic, which is why they sounded so rinky-dink. ‘Wheel’s on fire’ was at its heart a clavinet and a juiced-up banjo. Anyhoo, love your work, youngster!

I don’t believe anyone that wasn’t there back then can truly appreciate the zeitgeist of those times, but Abby comes pretty damn close.❤️live🎶

In a Station-Caledonia Mission-The Weight might be the best 3 song run I’ve ever heard. All members were incredible. Definitely in my top 10 albums ever.

I actually bought the album just for the cover back in the day and never regretted doing so. I enjoyed the piano/organ sound kind of an american folk Procol Harum

Hope everyone has put forth the effort to research the Swan Silvertones. Look for their 1946-51 period on King Records for some of the most amazing jubilee gospel singing ever recorded. If you're into roots music, you'll love it.

That cracked the code for me. I always wondered why the late 60s music was so vibrant, defying and modern and what happened for it to get so boring. There's my answer.

Low-key hoping for more Canadian album reviews in the future (even though this album wasn't recorded in Canada, I still think it's pretty cool that The Band had primarily Canadian members). I'm proud to be Canadian and listen to a lot of Canadian rock. I think you would enjoy a lot of the Guess Who's discography (and possibly early April Wine and Chilliwack?) I feel like Canadian rock really came into its element in the late 70s and early 80s but there were a lot of great Canadian bands up here in the late 60s and early 70s as well, in addition to artists like Neil and Joni who moved from Canada from the States to start a music career.

Fun fact: During the early 60s, Robbie Lane and the Disciples opened up for Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks at the Yonge Street bars in Toronto (as I grew up here!).
Now, Robbie Lane can be heard as a host today on Zoomer Radio with his 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s show every weeknights, also his "British Invasion" show on Saturday evenings, the "Top 10 at 10" and "The Next 11 at 11" shows every weekday mornings.

Not to be overlooked was the cover of This Wheels on Fire by Brian Auger and the Trinity with Julie Driscoll. In the 80s it'd be rediscovered as it became the closing theme on Absolutely Fabulous. Additional reading would be Barney Hoskyns Small Town Talk About Woodstock community. As Always a really fine overview.

I got the MP3 of this album and self titled.. Instrumentaly it’s very “Dylanesque”.. (of course). It has a very “homey” feel to it.
Incidentally, i did some research about The Band. And i won’t spoil the fun of you doing research but i will say that The Band and Gordon Lightfoot are indirectly related to the death of comedian/ actor John Belushi.
