It’s Week 2 of Summer Camp Digs 2026, and it’s 80s week so we’re digging into “Purple Rain” by Prince (1984).

Before this album, a 24-year-old Prince walked into his manager’s office and made a bet that could’ve ended his career. This is the story of how that bet made him the first artist since the Beatles with the #1 album, single, and movie in America at the same time.

I tried to watch the Deluxe Edition video but sadly the sync process was really frustrating. 9 of 10 times didn't sync, and the only time it did, it synced incorrectly, basically finishing the mobile video in a couple of seconds after sync. Love the idea, but I hope the implementation gets revisited.

Two problems. One I don't know why you went balls deep on Prince customizing the Linn Drum when all he did was reverse the chips inside it. I actually got to play around with one that was used by Midnight Star and The Deele. Two "Luke" Luther Campbell from 2 Live Crew said he designed the Parental label everybody started using because of his fight with Tipper Gore.

When Purple Rain came out, my Grandma had just been diagnosed with lung cancer (this was a couple of years before lung transplants were an option), and my mom had said that she wanted to hear some more of Prince’s music before she would let me buy more – not realizing at the time that I was only buying his singles that I liked – so we decided that we would go see the movie, and I was surprised that my mom, after we saw the movie, gave me $20, and said “enjoy his music”! Bought both the Purple Rain soundtrack and Condition Critical by Quiet Riot that day!

Great video. I highly recommend the Klingon track companion version! My dad took 11 y.o. me to see Purple Rain and tried in vain to cover my eyes during the scene where Darling Nikki played. 🤣🤣

If you want to hear the bass for When Doves Cry, Brownmark (Revolution bassist) has stated it was included when they would play the extended vamp during the tour. The Syracuse show (3/30/85) was released for purchase and recently remastered on streaming video. You can hear it there.

I'm confused about The Time being a rival band in real life. I was always under the impression that The Time was just another Prince creation, a satellite vehicle to showcase his music. I never knew they were a "real" band, for lack of a better term. Also, I never even realised that "When Doves Cry" didn't have a bassline. Learn something new every day.

Great Video! I love your delivery. The syncing is a little bit tricky if your iPods connect to the MacBook and the iPhone automatically, but once I switched off Bluetooth on the computer everything worked fine.
Great idea, these "Deluxe Edition" videos!

Hey DTG, could you please also put the QR code at the very beginning of the video, so we don't have to wait with the phone in our hands, thus not really concentrating on what you are saying in the intro?

I really love your innovation with the 'deluxe versions' of videos, but please make an alternative version that is able to be played on another tab. It's an (in my opinion) much more convenient way of playing a deluxe version (especially when wearing headphones, it sucks to have one play with speakers and one not). Love your videos!

This may be a strange and perhaps outlandish request… but could you do video breakdowns for some of Prince's other work as well? I love a purple rain analysis but an analysis of ATWIAD, Dirty Mind, Gold Experience, the Black Album, Emancipation… i would grovel at your damn feet. Cause i so rarely, if EVER see that done.

Having just re-watched his performances at first Avenue in Minnesota circa August 1983, i was left in awe— Prince had performed for the first time Computer blue, I would Die For You, Baby I’m A Star, let’s go crazy, purple rain, and a few other songs that made the inclusion of the album a year later. The man was ahead of his time. And the look on his face as he shredded the solo in Let’s Go Crazy is fckin fantastic.

Mind you he’d only just gotten on stage in LA to perform briefly at the insistence of ThrillerMania Michael Jackson and James Brown. He meant business with his motion picture and its soundtrack

Purple Rain had, at the same time, ultra pop songs and those ´weird´ moments that only Prince could deliver (Darking nikki, Computer Blue, When Doves Cry). Only strong songs, no filler.
And to think Purple Rain is only a fraction of what Prince could do. He was incredibly versatile and there is something for every taste. Even instrumental albums. Prince was one of the true geniuses of the 20-21 century

im a huge prince fan and i tried watching purple rain and it was fucking terrible lol, lot of uncomfortable scenes involving the main love interest. i get that The Kid is supposed to be misogynistic but as a woman it just grossed me out too much to watch. and it wasnt like the movie was good enough to make that aspect make sense, it was just kinda random and played for a joke but it wasnt funny…

regardless, purple rain is one of my favorite albums ever and its one of the few albums i would give a 10/10. absolutely brilliant album. gutting, sexy, danceable, with its own persona and aesthetic.

when i was a kid, i was obsessed with Purple Rain. my uncle had it on VHS, and i would watch it over and over. i was WAY too young (like way way to young) to be watching it, and i wasnt a Prince fan. im not even sure i knew he was an actual musician. i just loved the movie in a total vacuum. now im obsessed with the album. what an absolute Masterpiece.
