Stevil Was Hiding Something Creepier Than the Dummy

Dial-Up Days | October 14, 2026

You remember the evil Urkel dummy. But was Stevil really the creepiest thing in this episode of Family Matters?

For Dial-Up Dayz Spooktober, we’re revisiting the Halloween nightmare that turned the Winslow house into somewhere no kid wanted to be. Steve Urkel warned us before it started, but even that couldn’t prepare us for a familiar family sitcom where the laughs kept coming as the family disappeared.

Look past the wooden grin, and there’s something even more unsettling hiding inside “Stevil.” It’s in the jokes, the people Steve trusts, and the moment when the one person who should make everything better becomes part of the nightmare.

In this video, we explore why “Stevil” still gets under our skin, from Laura’s cabinet scene and Carl’s disturbing transformation to the false awakening that makes the ending so cruel. We also go behind the scenes to meet the performers who brought the dummy to life, uncover the unexpected person behind his voice, and revisit the making-of footage hiding in the end credits.

Then we look at “Stevil II: This Time He’s Not Alone” and why bringing the nightmare back changed what made the original so frightening.

Whether you watched it on TGIF in the ’90s or have seen it a thousand times since, this is a trip back to the Winslow house that might leave you looking at it differently.

🎃 What scared you most: Stevil himself, Laura in the cabinet, Carl’s puppet scene, or Eddie’s fake wake-up? Tell us in the comments—and share your suggestions for the rest of Spooktober!

Subscribe to Dial-Up Dayz for more forgotten TV nightmares, behind-the-scenes stories, and ’80s, ’90s, and 2000s nostalgia.

The show Passions was a guilty pleasure of mine, at least while the character Timmy was still on it. I had no clue that Josh Evans was also Stevil. This means he played a puppet that came to life twice. Pretty niche role, but he did it perfectly. RIP

4:27 Those advisories were not uncommon at the time for Halloween episodes in a comedy series. They were typically meant to set the mood and set up a joke rather than being there out of any real concern from the networks.

"Passions" mentioned, that takes me back, I remember we'd watch that in high school just because it was like the writers apparently went "let's make dark shadows but it gets progressively more insane"
edit: Unless there was a video here already about that. If not, there's an idea.

This was such a great show! My sisters and I never missed it! We didn't have much money when I was a kid, so we all looked forward to the TGIF lineup on Friday nights. It was one of our weekly highlights. Plus, no school the next day!

The TV Guide promo itself for this episode scared me when I was 13, I was too afraid to touch the episode. Flash forward, I'm an adult watching a video about said episode on the internet.

It's kinda fascinating how Family Matters started out trying to be relatively grounded and realistic but ended up becoming really surreal and fantastic simply because a one-off character ended up becoming insanely popular to the point of taking over the show.

The TGIF Expanded Universe has some fun implications. Harriet on Family Matters was the elevator operator on Perfect Strangers, Urkel crash landed into Step by Step with a jet pack(?) and was related to a friend of DJ Tanner. Then Michelle Tanner has a substitute teacher in class one day, Mark Cooper. the titular Hangin' with Mr. Cooper.

And the crazy thing is, I have seen some sites saying had Family Matters gotten a 10th season (which would be its final season, since it would end with the wedding of Steve and Laura), there would have been a third Steevil episode, where they would have brought in an evil living doll of Laura named Laurotten that would want Laura's soul. I don't know if this is real or fan-made, as I read no scripts were written for Season 10, so take that with a grain of salt.

I Enjoyed this Video, T.G.I.F. was Awesome in the 90's, in the Halloween Episode of Family Matters "Stevil", Carl acted as a Puppet is my Favorite, which doesn't Scare Me, it's still Hilarious, then Comes Season 9 of Family Matters: "Stevil II: This Time, He's Not Alone", Stevil and his Partner, "Carlsbad" do a Dance Scene, which is Still one of my Favorites.👍

I can't really think of anything I watched that scared me as a kid outside of seeing Tales from the Crypt and X-files when I was younger. I loved watching Are You Afraid of the Dark? and the seasonal Simpson's Treehouse of Horror episodes, but am unsure of anything that actually got to me that was related to television.

Gooey Gus! Ghost Writer! I still look that thing up every so often to just make sure I didn't imagine it. It's this nasty purple monster I always assumed was made of chewed gum. I only remember seeing the episode once as a kid, and it's haunted me ever since!
