Status Quo: The Best & Worst Albums

Classic Album Review | April 8, 2026

Status Quo have a fine body of work, and in this video I explore what I consider to be their best albums. But they have also produced a few stinkers, and I also look at those, as well as considering someof their better later albums.

My least favorite Quo album is 'Ain't Complaining'. It doesn't have a single track on it that I particularly like. Even 'In The Army Now' has at-least one great rock song ('Red Sky').

Quo – okay but any whole album is hard to listen to , rather too same sounding . I thought Army now was a good album , with save me , calling , invitation , overdose and Army itself . Backbone was pretty good, to add I love Liberty lane, that is a great track

Quo in the 70s was all pretty much the same sound , Some songs like little lady, whatever you want, don't waste my time, Caroline and Roll over lay down I liked . Songs like bye bye johnny , paper plane and all the other songs bored me to bits same sound different words . I preferred the late 80s which Quoers hate I know , perfect remedy is my fav ha ha – at least there was some better guitar playing .

Forget the same old 3 chord label. They, and many bands, are only remembered for the singles.
If people actually listen to their albums, they would understand they knew 5 or 6 chords!!

You can put Piledriver to Blue For You in any order depending on what mood I am in. I've put Bula Quo in with the covers as technically it was a soundtrack. Agree with Perfect Remedy being the worst although does have a few good songs on it. Why on earth they re-recorded Tommy for Rock 'Til You Drop always astounded me as that possibly goes down as their worst song for me.

    Live
    Ma Kelly
    Quo
    Blue for you
    On the level
The live album is in my opinion part of a trilogy of live albums in the 70s that will NEVER be equalled, the others being Made in Japan and Live and dangerous Dangerous,

“Best” is a very close call between Hello, On the Level or Blue For You. In truth you could make a case for any of the 5 studio albums from 72-76.

Worst – probably one of Back to Back, Thirsty Work or 1+9+8+2.

I haven’t included Perfect Remedy because although it’s very weak overall, it does have “The Power of Rock” on it (which is a mid-late period Quo highlight and should have been a single)

Heavy Traffic got me in to Quo as a teenager, then Search For The Fourth Chord, and to be honest it's all been a bit shit after that until Backbone. And unfortunately Rossi gets more money doing the talking tours now than he does anything else, so I think Backbone will be the last album we'll get from them.

Wow funny how people have different opinions.
I discovered Quo with Aint Complaining which is my fave album ever by anyone. That guy on keyboards joined about that time improved the music 1000%.
I agree that Backbone some bangers too … completamente inconocidos to the rest of mankind, unfortunately.

For me Quo took 2/3 albums to find there feet. When they finally did around Piledriver they went on a run of around 5/6 albums that were top notch, I also think they were one of the best live bands around. I was a huge fan and used to get stick off my mates because they used to look down their noses at them🤣But at the end of the 70s and into the 80s it changed. Lancaster and Coghlan leaving was a huge blow. And then a new radio friendly smoother sound turned me off. So much so I haven’t listened to any new stuff since the mid 80s. I still love the 70s stuff and listen to it to this day.
