“Sometimes I Was Quite Nasty…”

Justin Hawkins Rides Again | September 1, 2025

What sort of “persona” or mask do rockstars develop while they’re in the music industry? What really went down during those feuds with Lemmy and Noel Gallagher? Allow me to explain.

This clip was taken from Episode 1 of my JHRA Podcast with my producer Jenny May Finn – you can watch the episode in full here: https://youtu.be/XgswkFm68f0

to answer her question in a way justin probably can't, i would go to a darkness concert. I am a musician. I support myself playing, I write music too. You want your audience to grow for sure, but I have an audience, it's definitely not millions, it's not even thousands But there are people I can play my music for either at gigs or in person. That's an audience. You have to be thankful for that. but for me no it isn't a vain pursuit, i could be on a desert island and i would keep writing songs because they would be the little bits of joy that kept me alive.

What you said at the end is actually very profound.
It's exactly what I do as well and for the same reasons.
I'd just never analysed it but hearing you describe it was like you were looking into my soul!

In Buddhism they have this exercise where all the monks get together and make a picture out of coloured rice and as soon as it's complete they throw it away. I think it's called a mandala? The idea is to let go of your accomplishments.

I've been writing for 15 years and most of my recordings and demos are locked away on my computer. The band have released nothing compared to what I have actually written. I'll die and these songs will too.

Awww bless, I think your psychologist picked up on something that shines through you, that being you are a likeable guy. It's a good quality to have especially in your line of work. You are not arrogant like some people are in your industry, you are down to earth and do not take yourself too seriously, not everyone can do this as they worry too much about being judged. You obviously had talent from a very young age that your grandad could see, it's brilliant that you recognised this in yourself and pursued your dreams, becoming who you are today, such an achievement. It's ADHD awareness month, hope you don't mind me saying this but a lot of people with ADHD mask, myself included. They do this to protect themselves, because if they are judged they have a get out clause of it not actually being themselves. This is due to them lacking in confidence or really being introvert but disguising themselves as extrovert in order to be excepted by others. People with ADHD can easily turn to alcohol for there dopamine deficiency, as this is lacking so please do not beat yourself up as this can be so common. They are very creative, with art, music, drama, they have amazing attention to detail, with an original flare for fashion and flamboyance as they take more risks, therefore this can show in there dress sense. It's a good quality to have as some people do not have the confidence or guts to do this, even though they might like to, I have learnt this about myself, I am certainly not qualified, but in case it could help. I think this conversation was very topical, your response was very honest and genuine. I hope my response is received in a positive way. I think you have done amazingly well, as alcohol it is such an expectable thing and so easily addictive. You have done brilliantly well done. People like you make a difference to the world, keep being you! Thanks for sharing.

This attitude of being nice to people who are mean, I do that all the time. A lot of people around me don't get it, they think I'm being weak or something, dunno what's going on in their minds. Part of it is I can't help doing it, I'm not a grudgeful person. But there's probably a little bit of it that's about saying "See? I'm better than you, fucker," with a smile.
