Today we’re looking at some of the wildest twin studies and research to finally answer the question of Nature vs Nurture. What’s more important: your genes or your environment? Are you born smart or does your school matter more?

Nature vs nurture is simple.
Think of it as your genes are your foundations and your environment is how you build on it.
The % each account for doesn't matter, the fact is that you can't change the foudations you were born so there is a limit on what you can change and achieve but changes/variation is possible to a varrying degree.
Now IQ test showing difference based on the school is obvious. IQ test score is affected by academic knowledge ands its not an unbiased raw intelligence metric lol
But the twins studies are quite an interesting topic for sure.

whats weird also is that doppelgangers often have similar life choices and proclivities. maybe our gene expression guides our 'autonomy'. do we have free will?
i would argue strength of school is aligned w home stability and financial security, which absolutely effects IQ.

Our genes make us what and who we are – not the myths of "experience" and "free will." Our genes determine our anatomy, physiology, and psychology (barring pathology) more than all extragenetic factors (financial status, parenting, religion, education) combined. When are people going to stop believing their emotion-based myths and start facing reality?

As the mother of mirror identical twins, who clung to each other from the moment they were put in the bassinet after they were cleaned up & dressed for the very first time, I can’t imagine the fvcking cruelty within the person who thought it would be a good idea to separate twins who’d only known each other from the moment the egg split. My twins didn’t care about me, they had each other & that was all they needed. If I had been an emotionally immature person, like a solid third of the U.S., then I might have taken issue with it. Fortunately, I realized that they had each other in utero & they needed each other. Separating them? No way. Absolutely grotesque, people & their sociopathic tendencies.🤦🏻♀️

I've been a subscriber to this channel for many years and have enjoyed it for its science education and the hand drawn graphics, so seeing AI generated images being used in this video was very shocking. Especially since they did a video about AI a year ago.
I really hope they stop using generative AI in their videos going forward.

Ai said: not all twins separated at birth live similar or same lives. But the similarities are often way higher than you’d expect from random strangers. Wonder if extreme abusive in whatever forms upbringing , still maintain similar or same?

Thank you. You confirmed my belief that everyone is born pansexual and it's our environment that helps shape our sexualitiy, if further needed honestly, as we grow and learn about ourselves.

Twin studies are extremely useful in all kinds of sciences btw!
I remember reading one on the relationship between social media and mental health. They needed to find the direction of the relationship – do media lead to worse mental health and addiction, or is it that people who are predisposed to worse mental health and addictive behaviours just use social media more? And this is extremely difficult unless you do something like a twin study where you can control for these biological similarities!! I don't remember all the details, but they actually found that people who get addicted to social media tend to have those genetic predispositions in the first place!

I imagine “nature” or “genes” should b thought more of as “@ birth.” A lot happens with in-womb development that probably changes how identical twins could (inversely) have the exact same upbringing but become extremely different … or even how genetic clones often come out extremely different.
I’m still surprised by how different an ethnic diaspora becomes when individuals become expats. A lot of genes become present or absent bc of the cultural & environmental change. Like, yeah, maybe ur prone 2 certain health conditions but it can shift in a different lifestyle & region.

I remember learning about the twins in my college human growth and development class. I was sent paying enough attention to the name of the study. But the list of coincidences were significant enough for me to remember the twins.

In the UK there a 2 identical twin Dr.s (Xander & Chris Van Tulleken) One of them broke their leg as a child & had to have near bed-rest for at least a month, ever since he has be careful about food & exercise as he has a tendency to quickly gain weight.

I'd like a study on the effects of older siblings on younger siblings. I'm sure I would be far more successful if my older sister hadn't tortured me so much growing up 😂 I might even be smarter — who knows how many brain cells I lost to her abuse?!

I am wondering why the IQ test is still used as a viable metric in clinical and scientific research contexts when it’s already widely been established that the IQ was invented by a known eugenicist and that the IQ test contains racial biases and is engineered in a way to make specific groups of people perform poorly ? Can we throw IQ out the window?

About the marijuana use. Physical and environmental stress will cause people to seek out something that, even if temporary, will help them relax in their day to day lives. Marijuana is an incredibly commonly used substance that is proven to help relax the body, induce sleep, and avert your focus from the stress to something else…like watching cartoons and enjoying food.

Can we take a moment to realize that neither our genetics nor our environment are within our control. Either way, your life is deterministic. You have no free will.

There is a serious problem that needs to be solved: these twins shared the same mother and the same womb for about nine months!
You need to conduct a comparative study involving identical twins who developed in different mothers and wombs!
Even if they were homozygous for every single gene, you would discover surprisingly large differences! I promise you that! ; )

I would be interested in seeing what results would be if the twins were adopted to vastly different cultures. Psychology at large has a very obvious blind spot when it comes to finding results that would apply to humanity at large, instead of just the Western world. Even just the concept of IQ tests, they aren't universal. You can't go to a fishing village in Africa and expect the fisherman to ace an IQ test made for our standards, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have a high IQ. It's hardly a miracle that people with the same exact genes would share similar experiences if the environmental factors we're talking about is Missouri versus Ohio or Sweden versus Germany. You're given a certain frame and you'd be propelled by your traits to go in a certain direction. If there's, let's say a need to express yourself "hardcoded" on your genes, and you share a similar or the exact same variety of things to choose from, and one thing is especially popular among boys their age, is it a powerful show of genetic predisposition if both twins picked up electric guitar?

Travelling to the ISS in earth orbit is not INTERSTELLA travel. That requires going between stars – which has never happened except in the movies.
