Sifl & Olly: The Weirdest Show MTV Ever Threw Away

Dial-Up Days | June 25, 2026

Before MTV became dominated by reality TV, there was a strange little window where the channel still felt unpredictable — and somehow, that window gave us The Sifl and Olly Show.

Hosted by two sock puppets, Sifl and Olly was part sketch comedy show, part music show, part fake public-access fever dream, and part private joke that somehow made it onto MTV. Created by Liam Lynch and Matt Crocco, the show featured bizarre interviews, fake commercials, original songs, Precious Roy’s ridiculous home shopping products, Chester’s strange interruptions, and a kind of absurd comedy that feels like it belonged on YouTube years before YouTube existed.

But despite its originality, cult following, and fully produced third season, MTV never seemed to know what to do with it. The network aired it late at night, moved it around, cancelled it, and then left a complete season sitting unreleased for years.

In this video, we look back at The Sifl and Olly Show, how it started with two childhood friends and a box of old tapes, why MTV gave a sock puppet show a time slot, how it became a cult favorite, and why it may have made more sense later than it ever did in 1998.

Did you watch Sifl and Olly when it originally aired? Were you a Precious Roy fan? Did you discover it later through bootlegs, YouTube clips, or word of mouth? Drop your memories in the comments.

My friends and I still reference the bit where someone was trying to pitch Sifl and Olly a sci-fi movie that was a rip-off of Star Wars complete with a character named "Han Jobba".

So since my usual shtick of dropping "Crescent Fresh" in the comments without context absolutely won't work here, instead, I'll explain the ban on the word "fire". That one is Beavis's fault. His early habit of playing with a lighter while chanting "FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!" was falsely blamed in 1993 for inspiring a 5-year-old to set fire to his mobile home, resulting in the death of his 2-year-old sister (in 2008 the then 20 year old boy came forward to debunk the claim, pointing out that the family didn't have cable and that he'd never seen Beavis & Butthead). In reaction to the disclaimer, Beavis & Butthead was moved to a 10:30pm timeslot, had a big disclaimer slapped at the beginning of each episode, and Beavis was forbidden from doing his "Fire" chant. This ban must have spilled over to Sifl and Olly. Now as for the ban on "adopted"? Yeah, I got nothin' on that one, chief. Your guess is as good as mine.

I found this show many years after it aired when it was suggested by a friend of a friend. I got a hold of vhs rip files and really enjoyed it.
Didn't have MTV when this was airing, and surely wouldn't have grasped the comedy at the time, but I'm glad I found it when I did.

Fake blood, I love you love the real thing, and if you were the real thing, I'd love you more. So, pour it on, just like it's the real thing. Fake blood, you rock me like the real thing.

Sifl and Olly was peak "Wholesome Weird" for MTV – not weird and grotesque like "The Brothers Grunt", or weird and random like "Liquid Television", not weird and mysterious like "Aeon Flux" or MTV's Oddities (The Head and The Maxx) – Sifl and Olly was weird in a "Comfort Food" sort of way, like putting chicken nuggets into a pot of mac and cheese topped with soy sauce and freshly cut chives and eating it out of the pot with a big spoon and everyone in the common room is like "I mean that's weird but you're not hurting anybody and I'm sure it's probably pretty tasty actually and will likely fill that void in your soul" kind of weird. It's why I'll randomly say "Las Palmas" in sing-song whenever someone is confused by my instructions. Miss that show.
