Should We Seek Immortality?

Although we’ve been socialized to accept death as an inevitability, and live our lives knowing that its looming shadow will one day catch up with us, many of us might never really come to terms with it. Throughout our evolution, we’ve come up with ideas, beliefs and theories that attempt to shine a light deep into the cold, dark abyss of death to give ourselves a hope of continued living and everlasting existence. Could we really stop our cells from aging? If you could, would you want to be immortal?

I think we should seek to find completeness. We will probably need to extend and increase life expectancy to achieve that so things like nano bots, bio mechanical devices and auto injection of drug devices or even possibly extending the brain past body death in a simulated environment may be he way to go.

This is so stupid… First of all speaking about "inescapable immortality" is absolutely pointless since there is exactly zero chance it will be ever achieved. No matter what happens you will always have the chance to end your life.Â
Second of all. Death is an atrocious motivator. Do you think I go to college because I am someday going to die? Do you think I want to be better at my job because I am someday going to die? Hell no! And if this is what´s life like for you them I honestly pity you.

i’d just address the elephant in the room.
wanting or not wanting immortality is a clear showcase of one’s character.
those who wants immortality, so far i’ve seen, have shallow understanding of life and probably a coward in real life. not wanting to face the unknown or taking risks that leads to it, it really shows (also there’s a unique one here in the comments that linked desire for immortality with narcissism).
those who don’t have deep, thorough understanding of life and is a brave person at heart. they don’t condemn death or trying to escape it, they accept it and with that, comes an astonishing appreciation of life and others. in layman’s term, it’s ‘respect’.
those who desires immortality lack this kind of thought and respect, and i forever pity these fools

No matter what you think, this is a new biology engineering, the concept existed already, details going in the lab, over come aging and death that will come to our lives for real

We should seek longevity. Even if immortality isn't guarenteed, people suffer too much due to age. Even if it's an extra 20 years, it would benefit so much.

Immortality is the next cure cancer Ponzi. We can do both, but most will never afford access. The first modern species divide is upon us. Since you’ll have no privacy in the future, they’ll know exactly what to charge you in order to enslave your consciousness into a robot.

I'd rather die today than live forever.
I don't feel much for witnesing the last black hole evaporate and the last atom fall apart while I am there. Mortality means you'll lose everything eventually, which makes it essentially meaningless, but living forever strips everything of its meaning in its own way.

My grandfather died at the right time, he was in his late 80s, had lived a good life, was still quite healthy with no major health issues and simply died in his sleep, still lying on his side, eyes closed, in his own bed. It is possible to die at the right time.

Well, then billionaires want immortality, right?
For someone who wants immortality so much, they shouldn't be so distracted! You have to pay attention to these details. Certain information that tends to be ignored…

in an eternal life, human life would be precious, Imagine someone to kill someone else at his 30s when he could live up to 1000! That would be an even worse crime. Imagine innocent people to be killed as happens to wars or in the genocide in Gaza.

I love how people in the comments are talking like now we really have the option of immortality, but especially against the fact that humanity had to come to term with it in our history. Spoiler we are still doomed to die so better accept it for now. Personally I am for a longer and better quality in life but not never-ending. Because even if I am scarred everything has and end the sun, the earth… So I really think we have to die for some unknowing reason… And I have little faith in our society so I think we will find a way to waste things or make them worse (more wars, slaves at work, inequality….). At the end I also think that achieve complete and total immortality is impossible (we should find a way to have invulnerability…) and death will reach us in other ways.

Of course conquering aging would be great but if you really want to live for a seriously long time it's just the first step.
Consider that there are about 230,000 deaths through accidents every year in the US. This accident rate alone would mean that half of our ageless population would be dead in 1000 years.
Of course with improved technology we could make the world safer. Perhaps 1000 times safer. And maybe eliminate every fatal medical condition. Then we could expect to live for 1 million years. But that's still only one thousandth of the time the Earth has left before it gets swallowed up by the dying sun. And this assumes we eliminate war, murder and and environmental collapse. It also assumes that we don't get bored and indulge in risky behaviour or take dangerous drugs.
Biological creatures are just not made for immortality. We are too fragile to have lives that last for geological timescales. Species can last that long but not individuals.

You mortals were gifted mortality by your nature Immortality would be only a curse your spirits crave death even if you don't realize it if you were granted Immortality you would grow weary all the quicker until with every living moment is that of a wearyness and craving for death a life stretched thin I am arômêz the god of the hunt a lord among the ainur the true gods I am a true immortal but it is the nature of my being to be eternal mankind is ignorant and corrupt the take and destroy there ambition unending mankind will end by there hand soon but should they prove to continue a threat to the world I will interfere and destroy mankind I offer this to humanity follow me learn my Devine wisdom and turn away from your ignorance and corruption or be my prey and fall into oblivion

To those who say that life would eventually get boring after you've learned everything there is to learn and done everything there is to do, you're all completely wrong, first of all even doing all that would take literally billions of years, and that's much more than we currently get, and secondly and more importantly it's completely incorrect, because you can just experience the same things over again, for example, someone who likes to play soccer, doesn't stop liking soccer ever, if you liked playing soccer when you were 30, you will still like it when you're 90, the only difference is that now you're too old weak and fragile to play, so instead you just watch, if you were healthy forever, playing soccer would never stop being a fun activity, even after a billion years or forever. And the same thing applies to every activity, INCLUDING spending time with your loved ones, that would also never get boring. So even after you've learned everything there is to learn and explored every inch of the universe after billions and billions of years, you'd still be able to have fun living life by having barbeque parties with your kids and neighbors and playing video games with your best friend.

Immortality is little more than a selfish desire for those who have reached the point of disillusionment and try to usurp nature. Earth isn't some dead rock with living things traipsing about its surface; the planet itself is alive and changes every day. That is what makes life so unique.

I know I am immortal. Was born and never die. Found it when contemplating at my mother's coffin.
I will prove it in a simple logic for the world to understand, if I'm given the stage I deserve for this exceptional proof.
Would you like to know how to be immortal?

Perhaps this world is just a simulation created to trick our immortal souls into believing we are mortal in order to escape the horrific boredom of an eternal existence. Another possibility is when you die you simply become yourself as a baby again. If the past always exists then our lifelines will always exist and we are just living it over and over not realizing it. The past must exist in order to give rise to the present. So enjoy your life as much as you can.

I mean eventually morals and ethics would simply vanish goodwill doesn’t last and based on these comments ALOT of people would kill and destroy without a second thought to keep their immorality, but this isn’t new people do the same thing nowadays to keep their mortality, or Mabey become like the dark elder in war hammer 40k or meths in altered carbon or the super rich on Elysium obviously these are just movies so it’s hard to truly say

Man chases immortality, given the current state of human depravity, he will live long enough to realise that he’d rather take his own life than continue living in torture.

It allows for a natural evolution on our genome, culture & resources economy

THANK YOU!
I don't want to live forever, I just want to live for as long as I choose, to live the life I want, to be the person I want, and I really don't want to get old, that's it.
It's not about living forever, it's about gaining a bit more control over your life.
This something that all of these discussions seem to neglect.
Death DOES give life meaning, but the decay leading up to it, and how brief it is, does not.
