She Had a Gold Record at 15. Then She Quit.

Guitar Meets Science | September 30, 2026

Lillix, the all-female rock band from Cranbrook, British Columbia, seemed destined for superstardom when they were signed to Maverick Records by Guy Oseary at just fifteen years old. This week, we explore the rise and fall of the Evin sisters and their bandmates, from their humble basement beginnings as Tigerlily to their massive debut album, Falling Uphill. We’ll break down the corporate interference that polished their sound, the relentless touring schedule that broke the original lineup, and the legal warfare between Maverick and Warner Music Group that ultimately buried their career. Discover how their cover of “What I Like About You” became a Disney-era staple while the band fought to maintain their creative identity amidst executive chaos and internal feuds. Kindly like and subscribe – it really helps this channel a lot. I do appreciate it!

Kind folks who want to support the channel – I’d rather you actually have something in return for it. Something killer. Something that puts you heads and shoulders above the rest. So I have this:
This VST plugin, The Stereo Sound Extractor, is BADASS -I coded it up from over 10 year’s hard research. It won awards. Now you can own it for the paltry sum of $29. Yup, I’m basically giving it away: https://burninguitfiddle.gumroad.com/l/rbiuu

I remember that cover. I hated it. Sadly I never gave them another chance. I had them pegged as watered down Riot Grrl. I admit to being wrong. That wasn’t what they were, it’s what Maverick wanted them to be.

I was beginning to think GMS on YT was the only channel worth watching. Now I'm sure. Not only are you creating acts out of thin air, you're matching them up with fascinating career retrospectives and back stories.😊 Just messing with you.😂 Keep up the good work.😊

The Man, the Myth, the Legend is back. What happened to you? Did you channel your inner Rockstar and go on a four day bender? Good to see you back man. I was seriously contemplating life without Guitar Meets Science and it was a cold and lonely existence. Lol. 😂

9:01 very similar thing happened to the Veronicas for their third album with Sire records, thanks to Warner. We got one song from the third era. Absolute banger. And then warner closed down sire and shelved the record. The girls ended up putting some of the tracks from the shelved album on some later albums, but not all of them. I still think they could renegotiate with warner as a one off deal to put it out tbh. Warner seem to be a bit more nicer now than back then

I can’t believe how many people in the comments have never heard of Lillix. I had a massive crush on the singer when I was a teenager. They were awesome. I’m being rhetorical – I obviously understand that younger people wouldn’t have heard of them. But they were pretty big for a minute.

Sweet Temptation sounded like a decent song. Sad this band should have made it the singer can sing and all the girls are cute. The music is just meh. Tomorrow is okay but I am not sure who their demographic is. Preteens, teens, adults. Frustrating to see potential just wasted.

I never heard of this band before this video. I just checked them out on spotify. First album is too poppy, genuinely boring and over produced. The second album, the one that bombed – is pretty good. Thats a rock album. I enjoyed it. Its not ground breaking or anything, but so much better than the first one.

Sweet tempatation was such a moment and honestly still a banger today. I can't believe no one here have heard of them. The vid for sweet temptation really set a fashion tone for the start of the whole hipster scene. 18 year old me had a huge crush on all of them.

Record label says "We love you, think you're great and really want to support you, but we are going to change everything about you until you are basically unrecognizable because no one will like you the way you are. Also, we are going to hold you financially hostage unless you do what we tell you." This is literally a textbook toxic relationship.

I just listened to Inside the Hollow and the record company made the right call. It's not terrible. Certainly better than Everclear's last album, but it's the most generic "We did this ourselves and it shows" record. No hits. Just hints of what could have been with the right guidance and budget.

The only difference with many other bands is that they had a hit. I know of girls who where basicaly hired on their looks. 1 year company housing and coaching. They had some tv shows. No hit and they quit after a year, My guess that is more standard than we know. It is just buiness.

Can’t say I’m familiar with this band. When I saw the little blonde girls I thought they were that skin head folk band from the same time period. I can’t remember the name of that band. Something Blue. Russian Blue? Idk. These girls are definitely less offensive. Lol.

Another band I never heard of, but another chapter in the continuing lesson book of GMS: keep away from the major labels and stick to the indies. Or just sell your own music and merch online. You won't get huge, but at least you'll have your integrity and sanity and get to keep what you DO make (it's not like how it was in the 70s and 80s when labels seemed to give bands a chance). At least that's what I've been getting from many of these stories. Regardless, anther great story and video. Keep 'em coming! 🤘
