Yes, "misogyny" is the right word. And I think s/thing that's missing from this discourse is that the misogyny is also tied to settler colonialism. The White Literary world is deeply misogynistic and Alexi's professional success is tied to being a beloved figure of that world.

I attended the Canadian premier of Smoke Signals back in the day. The cast were all there. The mostly Canadian Indigenous cast I might add. Very exciting.

I was in high school at a DC Public school library where Sherman Alexie was in the audience of a Diversity Workshop I was speaking at. I didn’t know who he was. We would pick stereotypes about different races and put them on a chalkboard. We thought it was comedy gold!
I remember being the only person to stand up and represent the broad subject of “Native Americans.” I roasted the title considering there are more than 500 native first nations in North America the category itself is a stereotype. In the end I tore myself down for identifying as Cherokee since my family forgot our clan name and told white people to do the same. Unless you can get a scholarship. Joking. I said I grew up real sensitive to accents and how I listened to who I thought were Mexicans from San Antonio who sounded just like some “F’ng” Canadians I met, just saying “Daaang, stop plaayiiing…” My mind exploded, “How is that POSSIBLE?” 🤯😂 A Mexican from San Antonio? Sounds just like a Canadian? But it somehow made sense… duh… they’re native… 🤦🏻‍♂️
But then things got serious. I got up to represent not a race, but the titles of family itself: Brother, sister, mother and father… at 17 I made a speech in the school Library off Nebraska Ave;
“How do we forgive our fathers? Do we forgive them for being too strict? Or not strict enough? Do we forgive them for always being up in our business? …Or never being there at all? If we forgive our fathers, what is left? … It was a wise old Indian woman who once told me “We cannot forgive our fathers.” And after a pause she said, “Because we have already forgiven them for being born.”
I could hear Sherman Alexie in the audience go “Oooh… he TOLD them!” Like I let out some kind of big native secret? I still remember that.

I didn’t know who he was until after he left. My English teacher was sitting next to him and asked, “Did you get what you needed?” Sherman let out a long sigh, and said, “Yes.” I understood from her he was visiting DC on a grant to make a movie. Then the movie came out two years later.
I wonder why Sherman left out what I said at the end? 🤔 That we already forgave them for being born? Did he want to leave a mystery? Did he expect native people to figure it out? I always wondered.

They say a lie moves faster than the truth in the Wind, why do they say they do not want women on a ship supposedly because loose lips sink ships, that's true on multiple levels. And with that being said I would have to say women definitely do allow the sexual promiscuity to go on and that is a big part of the societal issues that are going on here soo yeah.

I really loved Sherman Alexie's writing back then. It's very unfortunate that he was harming people, of course things that a white person could get away with (not that he should get away with it, just frustrating that there are these double standards in white supremacist societies).

One of my favorite NTVS shirts is a campfire clipart on a white T with the text, "hmu". It was described as "the original texting" and said to have been inspired by Smoke Signals. I wear it when I'm feeling especially introverted.

It's hard to decide between watching this and Sammy Obeid's stand-up he just dropped, but I'll always choose Red Nation !
