Roblox Is An Unhinged Place

Roblox is one of the biggest games in the world, so I finally went in to figure out what kids are actually doing in there.

Roblox has more than 123 million daily active users, billions of accounts, countless games, and an entire economy built around Robux. As a dad, I wanted to know what Roblox is actually like, how its in-game purchases work, and whether I’d want my own kids playing it.

So my producer Dave and I made Roblox accounts, scanned our faces, spent some Robux, shot some children, grew an enormous tongue, stole eggs, became alarmingly invested in virtual animals, and learned quite a bit about how Roblox makes money along the way.

I remember me and my friends played back in 2009-2011ish. Roblox started back in 06ish. Back then, there was no voice chat, and you couldn’t use text chat if you weren’t 13+. “Dollars” were called “tickets” and there was a direct conversion rate from tickets -> robux. Robux couldn’t be spent in-game if I recall, but paying players could earn robux by creating custom cosmetics or creating popular games which could eventually convert back into real cash once you passed a certain threshold.

Like in any kids game, the pred. thing was probably always there, but old Roblox really was a place where we as kids met other kids, formed social groups, and learned how to code/create cool stuff. Despite the current state of Roblox, my kid self still thinks fondly of it.

I should probably try to sell my account lol

Internet as a kid in the early 00s: Randomly stumbling on an isis beheading video
Internet as a kid now: Companies grooming your children to spend money
Internet as a kid in the future: Can't wait to find out

They unironically have Tommy Danger as their chief safety officer. He had a badge from a "condo" game where kids and adults go into bedrooms and do emotes together in a really really weird way

I played Roblox since I was 9 or 10 and now that I’m an adult I will saw I’ve lost interest in most of this platform. I used to play games like (but maybe a bit higher quality and not as predetory) that but since then my tastes have gotten so much better, and I really can’t with those mindless games anymore. The only reason I play now is pretty much just to play Bribbleco games and maybe a couple other games here and there.

Did I have fun with Roblox as a kid? Yeah. Do I have fun with it now? Only on specific games. Do I recommend it for other kids to play? Probably not. There are some good games, even the less engaging or active ones, but nowadays many of the games on it now are just a video game version of cocomelon.

Keep Ryan away from Gotcha Games… Genshin Impact, Honkai Star Rail, Zenless Zone Zero and Wuthering Waves have already captured my GF. And my wallet.

If I wanted a specific character I would Pay $50 for that exact character. Not spend $100 for the chance to possibly get that character, maybe. It's 100% gambling for kids / adults.

The only thing I have heard is worth even making an account for is their Nuclear Reactor Simulators. Apparently some of them are pretty detailed and good. At least till they are scripted to trip or overload.

A wise man once said "90% of everything is garbage." But he was wrong.

Because Roblox is games made exclusively by people who don't have the skills needed to make a real game so it's 100% garbage.

No one with the ability to make a game worth playing is putting it on Roblox.

So let me get this straight, the website famous for attracting children is now… Making them scan their face before they register? And feeding that data into an age-detecting algorithm? Because there ain't no way an actual human is doing the recognition? So the kids' faces are fed to AI?? For their safety?? Who's managing those images? How are they protected from leaking to generative algorithms (since we all know websites are selling our info)?
I mean. I GUESS at least the kids are being segregated away from potentially predatory adults and adult-specific spaces. But why is this the system we came up with?? Why isn't there a more harsh sieve to find the adults instead? Like, if you had to put in your social security number or something… Idk, that seems like a data breach waiting to happen in itself. But like. Surely we can do SOMETHING better than this??
