Rental Ripoff Hearing LIVE with NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani
We’re giving the microphone to students and young renters to talk about their poor living conditions, sky-high rent, and their landlord’s egregious business practices. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Director of NYC’s Office to Protect Tenants Cea Weaver will answer questions and talk about their plan to make New York City affordable for all. Eliza McLamb and Saphe are kicking off the event with live music.

Remarkable how massive data centers get built and powered, seemingly overnight., yet housing is an impossible dream.

Edifying tenants unions is nice, but our government could also regulate industry, too. Organizing tenants is a lot of hard work; shouldn’t be only us to fight major beasts like Columbia. Y’all act like you’re hand are tied. Our government could also set regulations and policies for equitable development. Our government could stop private equity from buying up all our land. They just choose not to 💵💵💵💵

I think it’s nuts that people think he’s socialist or communist when I’m sure the city (what’s left of it) is going to be sold out to real estate developers under his tenure. Those rental ripoff hearings were just smoke and mirrors. This is public money and public land going to private industry and private developers who won’t pay taxes because they’re providing sprinkles of “affordable housing”. MIH/AMI are tools for gentrification, not for affordable housing. It also exacerbates the disinvestment of public housing if these multibillion dollar private equity firms aren’t paying property taxes while our education system is based on property taxes. Moreover, Mamdani and Cea Weaver have already expressed their interest in privatizing public housing—the very antithesis to socialist politics; we should be supporting the social housing we already have. They have already made clear an agenda that disenfranchises residents and lets private equity play with our public housing homes. We don’t want PACT, we don’t want the Trust. We want Section 9–real social housing with the most robust tenants rights in the nation. The way in which his office has been avoiding/ignoring NYCHA residents is despicable, especially the residents of Fulton Elliot and Chelsea who’ve been trying to meet with him since he announced his candidacy. As a former constituent of his assembly district, HE DID NOTHING MEANINGFUL FOR PUBLIC HOUSING RESIDENTS, or any working class resident at that. His staff did more than he ever did. Just another lying politician 🙄💔 – a NYCHA resident

Nothing will ever change for the better until we put corporate America back to the infancy with very low rights other than limited liability. Keep corporations out of residential

In my hometown, East Lansing, MI, student rentals are so insanely expensive that housing prices there have pushed me to live in a low-quality part of adjacent Lansing. I wish I could afford to live in my hometown again

I applaud people rallying together as our founders did for freedom. But, history has shown that Communism does not work. It becomes vile and destructive as those who decide who gets what gain power and control. Actual freedom is lost along with individual identity. There is no way to control it’s human desire of those in power to shape THEIR own beliefs on the population for their benefit not society. Wake up America. Take back control of your own destiny. Eliminate lifetime elected officials. Term limits are the first steps for us to take. Not socialism. Both are poisonous.

Fix NYCHA. Fix the apartments under your control. Hold yourself accountable and follow the own rules you’ve created.
NYCHA a jurisdiction of your government is the worst offender. You’re the worst landlord.

It is easier to just vote with your feet and move. I thought that living in Tokyo was way overpriced. It was fun for the short term time that I lived there or to visit. But, I would never want to "live" there or raise a family there. Moved out to the countryside, bought a huge 3 story steel reinforced concrete house for my wife and 4 kids, with a back yard and trees, a garage, a barn and parking for 7 vehicles for pennies on the dollar. It is a really nice place just a 10 minute walk from the beach. Both the elementary school and middle school are only a half mile away, along with the bank, post office, and 7-eleven. Busses run regularly to catch a ride to the train station or hospital. Why would anybody stay in a place like Tokyo or New York living in comparative poverty, when you can live like a king in a 10,000 different places?

Lots of luxury condos and apartments were built in the past 30 years. All of those are cheap and technically "affordable." That is the whole point of the modern architecture "international style." No details, no handcraftmanship, just housing. Realtors and contractors rebranded them, and it's nothing more than lipstick on a pig.

Over the last four years, british uni students could not afford to rent anything near their uni so they slept in cars and tents. Students had rat bites and their tents, clothes, food and books were eaten by rats. Britain has been utterly decimated due to leaving the eu and then being price gouged by monopolies. The corruption of the conservative party in britain over 14 years utterly destroyed everything. Then the labour party was taken over in a coup back in 2019. The current prime minister, keir starmer was the top human rights barrister in britain but he was an undercover US- israeli schill ,lying in wait to facilitate whatever israel ,the US and billionaires want to do. Now the public are screaming for his resignation and the reversal of all his legislation, policies and contracts with oracle, palantir and metaverse. Students in britain were destroyed during the pandemic and most could not even get part time work at all since 2020 as there are no jobs. The housing crisis is beyond belief. Over 125,000 families live in hotel rooms or hostels. Landlords doubled the rent after tax breaks were given to the wealthy by a prime minister, liz truss, who almost crashed the economy. Inflation rates went up,interest on mortgages went sky high so rent went up and it never came down again. So students are getting eaten by rats. It is not mary poppins land in britain. It is a return to the era of oliver twist.

He needs better advisors because there's too many ways his idealistic pov is flawed. As soon as his team unknowingly tries to take ownership of a building that's owned by an investment firm the city will get sued into oblivion. Real estate law is extremely complex.

Sounds awesome now what is the catch however, when asking a lot of scholars to get involved in China was how China eventually targeted specifically those who chose to share with the government, how can we ensure that is never gonna occur again and that's not gonna occur at all in the USA?
