Putin’s in big trouble, He had to get permission from Zelenskyy for his parade this year and had to go crying to BFF Trump to get it. I wonder how he’ll fare next time. If Zelenskyy had wanted to attack it, it’d been a blood-bath parade and Putin’d been hiding the entire time. Russia’s now been retreating for 2 months. I expect this will accelerate until they’re out of Ukrainian territory.

Recently Putin has been sending hidden signals that he wants to stop (together with a lot of posturing). Aside from Ukraine Putin has to contend with an increasing internal dissatisfaction feedback loop that results in tighter security, an economic depression, a population in decline, and a slew of other problems. Putin has a small window opportunity to stop this war before a multidimensional vortex of trouble hits him.

Putin’s real threat has never been an attack from NATO or the EU but rather the spread of Western-style democracy and "color revolutions" in neighboring states that could spread into Russia. NATO/EU membership often goes hand-in-hand with EU integration, democratic reforms, improved standard of living, and limiting governmental corruption which threaten the Kremlin's model of governance.

Once the war machine is activated, it’s hard to turn off. People’s lives and livelihoods become dependent on it. Greed stiffens it further. Some people would rather die than see the war machine cease.
