Pow!
Pow! is an animated short film about Jake, a young Native American kid scrambling to charge his dying video game console at a bustling Coastal Salish intertribal powwow, where he learns that loving video games and loving your culture aren’t mutually exclusive. Written and Directed by Joey Clift (Cowlitz), made by a largely Indigenous team and with an all-Native voice cast. Pow! is a comedic love letter to the communities that raised us.

Two details I love:
1) the video game itself seems to have Indigenous themes with the bear (spirit animal?) fighting evil settlers (the Pilgrim hat)
2) The grandmother went through the residential schools which erased her culture and cut her hair, schools which were recently exposed for having mass graves containing indigenous children who died or were killed in those schools. It was a horrific thing that was hidden for so long until the graves were dug up. I found myself crying when the grandmother started relating her experiences.

It's refreshing that at no point was the kiddo shamed for playing during the event. Big events no matter how significant are hard and being pushed into participating only creates negative memories.

I often feel the same way regarding my phone and my handheld games as well. Weaving that with the cultural ongoings of the powwow is simple yet brilliant. Shout out grandma as well, surviving boarding schools, Alcatraz and Standing Rock, she's lived quite a life

i like it so much, grandma's memories and the present story of Jake get intertwined so well, the importance of living and expressing your culture and tradicional dances bring people as one, though Jake didn't want to be participate, it was enough that he was there. In my school in Perú it was mandatory to learn some tradicional dances, so i can identify that i also as a kid didn't want to be part of it but now i'm glad that those costumes still are preserved and shared at a young age.

Man so many highlights from this! The dad cracked me up, so did the poor frybread guy! Absolutely love that Jake is both non verbal and not villainized for it! Truly so wonderful to see more and more communities being represented, may there be many more!
