Popular Misconceptions About Ancient Rome

Due in large part to popular Hollywood films like Gladiator and Ben-Hur, there are plenty of misconceptions about ancient Rome and the way Romans lived. The ancient Romans wore togas, but not very often. They had several leaders who were certainly ineffectual, brutal, and careless, but they weren’t necessarily insane – nor did they sing a sad song while the city of Rome burned down. There were gladiatorial fights, but they weren’t nearly as bloody as we’ve been led to believe.

I heard (from a Roman expert, a well-respected professor at "Oxbridge") that Caligula's supposed making of his horse a senator was, in modern terms, a troll. He wasn't impressed by the senators of the time and he essentially declared that his horse had more knowledge and common sense than the humans.
Frankly, it's December 2024, and we all know that a horse would be utterly desirable in place of certain people…

I would also add that gladiators tried to be on the chubby side (unlike portrayed in movies) to prevent the sword from going too deep if they should get injured.

Greece came before Rome, but double vowels came after Rome. Probably the same place, same time period, two different languages, hence all the copying.

In movies, Caligula is pictured with a full head of hair. In reality, he was going bald and forbade anybody to be physically above him to prevent them from looking down at his bald spot.

Would love to see more videos about Ancient Indian civilizations/societies as well. I know ‘The Ancients’ podcast has some good episodes about the Mauryan empire and war elephants, but I think it’d be cool to see what you guys can cover about that history. Thanks—love the content!!
