PODCAST: The MTV VMAs weren’t even on MTV this year

Todd in the Shadows | June 17, 2026

We say every year that this was the worst VMAs ever, and we’re always right. This year hit new lows of being both irrelevant and unwatchable, thank god for Sabrina.

The name 'MTV' really means nothing to anyone just about under 30 or so, I'm 39 and my generation was probably the last one that really experienced when MTV was an behemoth and was very culturally relevant, it's so sad to see it become more of an shell of itself year by year

MTV is no longer relevant to youth and pop culture. My teen years MTV had total influence in what we became interested in NOT ANYMORE. Tik Tok is the Driver Now with a fragmented group of Gen Z content creators. Even i have aged out Video Game IPs like Call of Duty. Now there are MP skins of TMNT and WWE superstars. The wrestlers are something I was suprised didn't happen sooner.

Rock and metal are in no way dead. they've just gone back underground. But there's plenty of metal bands still in the spotlight. KsE, Halestorm, Epica, Iron Maiden, Amaranthe are all touring right now.

Not that I expect Todd ever reads comments, and this comment is weeks late, but I think it's time…
Time for TitS to address Green Jello in an upcoming One Hit Wonderland.

I just went back and rewatched the old top 10 worst and best videos and wow…do I feel old now. It would be pretty cool to see you, Todd, go back and react to your old top 10 vids and see if you would keep them the same or change them up.

If lady gaga is legacy with that logic wouldn't Taylor be legacy. That's bad outlook. You are still contemporary if you are one of the few artist with multiple top ten hits and one of the best selling albums of the year currently. I'm not a fan of Lady gaga like that but I'm not going to act like she isn't relevant in 2025 with her current album. Doing a lot better than most artist this year in the pop category.

what they said about conan gray is really funny to me because i feel like everyone’s either a diehard fan of him or doesn’t care and there’s no in between

Great pod. I think they moved the MTV awards to CBS and showcased some older artists because they are trying to attract older viewers now. Younger viewers don’t watch award shows. Only highlights, certain performances online.

idc much about the vmas, i could have sworn they just dissapered after 2011. i'm just hoping anxiety by doechii makes it on your worst of 2025 list. that shit is as annoying and painful to listen to as dance monkey was five years ago.

@ToddintheShadows I have been watching your videos for a few years, and I have been a fan for a while. If you ever do another Trainwreckords video, I would like to see you do one on Sia's 2021 album "Music: Songs From and Inspired by The Motion Picture". I think it would be interesting to analyze the movie and album both, as these projects, in my opinion, killed Sia's career. The movie ended up being critically panned, especially for its portrayal of autism (with Maddie Ziegler's performance as the title character being one of the major criticisms of the project), and Sia's reaction on social media ended up making the situation even worse. The album was met with mixed reviews and failed to chart on the Billboard 200. The failure of the project carried further for her next album, "Reasonable Woman," in 2024, as it only reached number 155 on the charts, a far cry from the number one albums from the 2010s such as 2014's "1000 Forms of Fear" and 2016's "This is Acting".
