I like the remix by James Guthrie a lot. The instruments are separated much more and especially the drums and keyboards sounds much more " alive".
The original mix had always this DBX foggy blur , so the record never sounds as good as Wish… or The Wall. On the other hand are their some bits a little bit mixed down in the new mix ( some rhythm guitar on DOGS and SHEEP, some ARP synth. stuff on PIGS which I miss a little bit, but over all I prefer the new mix ! I like Gilmour's vocal's on PIGS, all the vocoder sounds are much better sonically, all elements of Nick Mason's Ludwig drum kit sound
magnificent and all in all it's more crisp and clear !
By the way: Animals is maybe the very best work by Pink Floyd.

The original sounds like a 70s album as it should. The remix sounds like they are live in your livingroom. I listen to both.

Never was a fan of PF but this remix got me into them. I think modern sound helped a lot. Thanks.

The local shop has got both version and for the life of me I cannot decide which one to get even after watching and listening to every possible comparison video. 😫
Also, even listening to flac files does not help.

The 2018 remixed and remastered version is excellent. The original had the worst sound of any of their 70s albums. The bass is much cleaner and easier to hear now. Very well done. 5 stars.

I love Animals and the more I listen to it the more it creeps up my list as my favorite Pink Floyd album. I think the 2018 remix version is excellent , the bass and drums are more prominent with the vocals being clearer.

Animals and physical graffiti always reminded me of each other as they both sounded a bit under water. While you'll never get a zeppelin remix from mr page, the last remaster brought it out of murkwood, like this remix has done for animals.

Theres some thing strange about this album. Cant seem to…hear it right. Everytime i put it on its like i blank out. But i love the overall subject/ sound. But it still has weird effect. My fave thing about latter Pink is they never over do it.

I think it is the first time in my life when I like a remix better than the original! Absolutely great!

Animals was my "first" Floyd release. By that I mean it was the first Floyd vinyl that I bought with my own money within 2 months of it's release and thus has always been my favorite. And the time frame it came out in meant I spent almost all of my listening to the vinyl through head phones. Apartment living did not lend itself to playing music very loud. Thus it took my several months to come to grips with this recent remix. I must say the 5.1 mix played at reference levels is astonishing and will be my preferred listening experience. However my preferred 2.0 mix of the record remains the 1994 remix….mainly for headphone and in car listening. I am glad to have the choice and will take advantage of my access to modern technology to its fullest. Another great review. Regarding the subject matters look at late stage capitalism as a failure….it's not lost on this release with the change in artwork. A once great monolith of modern technology is being covered to make room for condominiums.

Heard this for the first time today and it felt empty, cold, metallic. The reviewer here hits the nail on the head about the original mix feeling 'claustrophobic', this quality is lost in the new mix. There is also an autumnal darkness to the original, typical of many late 70s albums, again lost. Don't even get me started on the 'new cover'….

Quick question Barry: Why stress on the 94 remaster instead of 2011 remaster? (this is something I really wonder regardless of the new remix collection)

I'm sure I don't have the sonic vocab, but it starts and ends badly with this mix, as the reverb is removed from RW's voice in both iterations of Pigs on the Wing. I miss the chilliness. Still, I like this guy's review of the remix's strengths. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZA8HtFe3xA
What I love is the packaging. It's stunning, and among the best I've ever seen. I don't need this album on vinyl (and if Discogs is anything to go by, it's a crackly mess), but I'm tempted to buy it just for the cover and booklet, whose contents are ar of such of a high standard they deserve their own exhibition at the nearby Tate Modern.

The new mix may not be for everyone, but this affirmed that this is my favorite album sonically. Enhancing the drums makes everyone feel so much more together. I’m not sure if that was intentional, however it’s a lovely touch! I do wish some instrumentals weren’t brought down, Roger’s vocals on both parts of “Pigs On the Wings” come across more frail, but they’re supposed to be more love-centric cap offs so it doesn’t bother me. Just, overall a mix I would have never expected to enhance my love for Animals lol.

This new so-called “re-mix” is an insult. It is not a re-mix. It is an EDIT! They edited out certain instruments completely. For example, between the 2:30–2:42 minute mark in Pigs (three different ones), they completely removed the cowbell. Gone!!! Without that cowbell, the rhythmic drive of the song is lost. It is no longer the same song. I urge you to compare it to the original mix, and you’ll see what I’m talking about. This new mix is a fraud. It is not Animals. It is an imposter.

To my honest opinion: Animals has been “broken” from the start: too blurry and to flat. I loved the music but not the sound. A bit of a disappointment after WYWH where the clear sound addeted a certain sterility which suited that album very well.
Now it is fixed properly and that will result in much more listening to Animals then ever before.

So I have given this a fair listen. On the whole I like it. Rogers bass is right up in the mix and is so much clearer which I like as he's playing at his most funky. He is well murky on the original.

I was just about to leave a comment on the vid offering of the actual remixed Animals when I found this vid comparison. I agree with the video poster…the remix has some nice points but sometimes to the detriment of the original. Case in point (for me) : Perhaps the greatest point of the album IMHO is during Pigs (Three different ones). On the reintroduction after the heavy instrumental break, the organ intro is a repeat of the beginning of the song, except stripped down to the single melody note. This was altered on the remix to include the organ harmony part. This change removes from the rawness of that moment in the music.
That's just one example of why I wish these remixes were left to the original artists, or, maybe spared for albums that were engineered poorly and could possibly be enhanced.

For the first time I have to disagree with you. I have been PF fan since I bought the first album, way back then in 67 I think it was, when they were hardly known in music. I went with most of their experiments including More which I love. Ummagumma was their only disaster at that time.
I embraced their unique brand of music and enjoyed them being adventurous. Animals, however I liked but did not love, it sounded a bit unadventurous and Roger started to whine a bit, not like say, Set the Controls etc. not technically minded the sound seemed in a bit of a fog. Sorry I cannot explain it better but this new mix, WOW! Everything is clean, chunky guitar, haunting organ, pounding drums. Suddenly Roger’s lyrics are supported by the music and it doesn’t sound as whiny. I know this is only one man’s opinion but I think this mix is exceptional, revitalises the album and now I rate it as one of their best.
Keep up the good work though, I enjoy your musical commentaries.

A companion piece, yes. Essential, no and in no way better than the original. Animals for me the last time a PF album sounded like a band album and a brilliant album at that!

I find the old version more relaxing to listning. But they did a amazing job on the remix but it feels a bit like a remake. The 5.1 mix. Is a bit on the cautious site to my like. I wish Steven Wilson had done the job. There is not so much surround sound in the mix. But that is also a matter of taste afcours

i don't like this remix. the vox, guitar solos/melody lines and synths are louder in the mix with some reverb dialed back. the bass and electric pianos are buried in cotton balls. the nuance in the rhythm section is pushed to the background.
