In Australia at the time, they weren't considered alternative. They were very much mainstream/top 40 rock (in those days, of course, rock bands could be in the top 40). To me, this shows how arbitrary these distinctions can be, because, yeah, they totally sound alternative.

Saw Midnight Oil at this Temu Lollapaooza called Another Roadside Attraction. Peter G stops during some song. Proceeds to scold the audience for pushing around too much. Then starts pointing out people and getting security to toss them. “You and you and him and that one over there! “ As well meaning as it may sound it was gross. But the fun part was after I read some press on this festival, turns out that was part of the act. He did it at every show during the same “ some song” and it was called “ crowd rant” on the set list. I didn’t see this part mind you I only read about it in Exclaim or something.

Since this video came out, the Oils released two last albums, one a collaborative project with Aboriginal artists and their final one themed largely around climate change. I haven't heard them yet but their cover art game is on point.

The amount of irony of a man singing "our country was never invaded, our shoreline was never in flames" although Darwin was bombed by the Japanese in World War II, and then becoming a politician is laughable.

Met a 50 something Australian guy at a party in Berlin and asked him how many Midnight Oil concerts he's been to. He first looked a bit offended by me stereotyping him like that before he answered "Four".

I don't know if you researched Sir Robert Menzies or just chose him at random, but as an Australian history buff, I can assure you that there is a LOT of blood on the hands of "Pig Iron Bob".

I'm from Washington State, born in '78. I always liked them growing up. I never considered then one hit wonders. But I was young and liked them

3:56 even men at work, the band who sings down under, are a genuinely prolific band. They sing who can it be now, be good Johnny etc. they’re very good and no one knows about them except Aussie’s

I'm australian and I utterly hate Midnight Oil. I have this theory that Peter Garrett saw his friends create a band, had no musical talents, so they let him be the singer just so he would stop bothering them. Can't stand his voice, can't stand his politics, can't stand how much of a sell out he was when he became a poltician

Well of course Air Supply aint in that book

    1) they aint really technically Australian,

they have like …1 Australian out of 2 people (yes i am aware of where they were formed)

but the other dude is technically English so they dont really count as simply "Australian" (AC/DC count as Aussie since Bryan joined AFTER they were formed for the record)

    2) ……they are Air Supply 😂
