One Beer And You’re Dead

Guitar Meets Science | July 1, 2026

Sum 41, the Canadian pop-punk giants of the 2000s, defined a generation with hits like “Fat Lip” before collapsing under the weight of addiction, internal feuds, and a devastating grooming scandal. We trace the chaotic journey of Deryck Whibley and Steve Jocz from their early days in Ajax to their war zone documentary in the Congo and the shocking lawsuit against former manager Greig Nori. From the massive success of *All Killer No Filler* and *Chuck* to Dave Baksh’s departure and Whibley’s near-fatal liver failure in 2014, this is the full story behind their recent breakup and final album. We explore how they survived against the odds to record one last masterpiece. Kindly like and subscribe – it really helps this channel a lot. I do appreciate it!

One beer and you're dead? By that logic, I should have been dead millions of times over. 😃🍺But seriously, while I'm not into their music, it's still a great story and video. Keep 'em coming! 🤘

Learned a lot in this one. I must admit I mostly just knew a few songs that were catchy like Fat Lip obviously, those were the good old days until late 2001 when the shit hit the fan. For everyone really. Thanks again man!

No offense to fans, but as an old Gen-X’er, the best line of this always luminous writer was, “And that’s is it—no more Sum 41.” 🥸

    (Great job, Yimmy! Natch. 🤘🤘)

I'm not familiar with their music but I remember they were a thing.
3:54 I love that word and I love Anna Nichole!

I like how the chick in the blue shirt dances and the guy doing back handsprings off the high dive should get a medal.

That poor drum kit, I hope it's ok now. Seriously though,
I lost my ex to alcohol and almost lost 2 others to it, that shit scares me and I do the hard stuff.

Sitting around in my underwear, until the SA and the grooming came into play, and I felt like it was inappropriate. So put my shorts back on. I had no idea this all went down. I love SUM 41 they always had a good time, or what looked like it. This crazy industry always ruins a good thing.

I couldn't get my prescription for pain killers this month….thus my vodka comment. The pharmacy can't get them until July 26. I've gone through so many kinds of withdrawal as a musician that it's a normal expectation. I've beaten every drug except LSD!

My doctor told me "one more drink and you're dead" in 1982 and I'm hitting a half gallon of vodka tonight, occasionally. But back then it was true…two weeks in the hospital because of cheap 103 proof Fighting Cock whiskey. A nurse in the hospital whispered to me, "Smoke some weed…it will save your life!" I was in COURT just months later for possession! 10 days in jail……

Order in Decline wouldn't leave my turntable for weeks on end when it dropped.
    It's so effing good.
I still grab it every couple of weeks or so to play.
    Luv this band.
Glad they all came full circle.
