North Carolina Tribe Pushes for Federal Recognition

Leaders of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina appeared before the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, urging passage of the Lumbee Fairness Act—legislation that would finally grant the tribe full federal recognition. With backing from neighboring tribal nations, bipartisan political support, and a written endorsement from the Department of the Interior, the Lumbee made their case while also addressing long-standing debates over identity and history.

    Who are the Shawnee and the Cherokee to say, whether they (the Lumbee) should or should not be federally recognized??🤔 The Lumbee went through racial reclassification, due to the federal government, stripping them of their American Indian identity in the first place.

    You guys that are defending the Lumbee are silencing actual native voices. Do your research, you can’t even mention them cause they are so controversial in sub Reddit, but you can say any other tribe there. Cause we already been over this and disproved all their claims of being Native American. Shame on all of you.

    NO, they are a fake tribe who has changed their origin story many times and used conspiracy theories, they have no native language, they use a Mixed match of Cherokee and other tribes regalia; they don’t have their own because there is no Lumbee authentic style. They are pretendians and this is beyond disrespectful to actual natives. A scheme to get land and belong somewhere, go look into your European or whatever other cultures that you actually are. This is disgusting!

    Clearly not supporting Palestine and believing in intersectionality of struggles. No public record of an official statement from the Lumbee Tribal government (e.g., the Tribal Council or Chairman) could be found that explicitly condemns Israel or takes an official position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

    The Lumbees are licking Trump ass. The Lumbee community, which is largely concentrated in Robeson County, North Carolina, has shown a significant and relatively recent shift toward Republican candidates in national elections.

    And their hat with a bible… damn 😡
    I have no respect for them.

    My Grandfather Told Me When the Venetie tribe in Alaska fought for it's Sovereignty they took their fight to the United States Supreme Court Judge's and they Ruled that the Alaskan Tribe's had signed away Our Sovereignty In The land Claim's Settlement Act In 1971 ! That Sovereignty cannot be taken away not even by force Sovereignty cannot be signed away Sovereignty can only be trespassed on!     What little Indigenous Sovereign Tribal Nation's that are left in the World must be recognized by the World And more importantly the United Nations and the Invading Nation's and restore Our Sovereignty Entirely!     as being tongva natives owning most of the southern calif land, we are no recognized by the federal goverment only because of all the land involved .most of the tribes who want to be recognized and most of the ones who are sell out everthing except for their chinese made costumes. after everthing this govt. has done to native culture they can have their federal recognition freakin sell out goverment control of their lives

    Aho to all Lumbee Nation of North Carolina. I believe all Native Americans should be Federally recognized and have a tribal home. ( all Tribal Nations are full of mixed racial backgrounds now. If you want to be so strict then no Tribal Nation would qualify)

    Also this is one topic where I deeply wish that this channel which I love sooooo much, would do deeper journalism before platforms this particular group. This channel does extremely good work but covering this topic kinda taints this channels factually believability on all other topics. If covering something that is widely known to be misinformation or false and give it a platform of authenticity to misinformation and it will cause the audience to question the factuality of other news stories that are actually factually accurate. I love this channel but when you platform groups like the lumbees it’s the same as platforming sacheen littlefeather and buffy sainte-marie
